120．So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present.

Our world undergoes changes everyday, today a new computer virus with a new ridiculous name, tomorrow a new conflict happened to break out in some unknown area of Africa. As Forrest Gump’s mother always said, “life is like a box of chocolate, you never know what you are gonna to get”, I have to admit that the complexity of the world is beyond my poor imagination and I really have no ideas of what I will receive from my kind God. But I have an intimate friend, one from whom I could find the guidance for living in the present. That is, as you might also find answers in it, the past.

It is interesting for us to find that the complicacy and strangeness of today occasionally seems to be nothing but a joke that God plays with us, for the word “new” itself is questioned when we look into the past. The more we are familiar with the history, the more we will find the new are but “new pitcher found with old wine”, they are only some old problems or old ideas with a new form. We might notice a new conflict between Israel and Palestine on today’s newspaper, no matter how violent and extensive it might be, its cause lies rightly in the history, in the struggle between the west and the east, between the Christian and the Islam or something. So are many new politic, scientific and artistic problems or ideas we have today, in fact, they are the same problems as we met hundreds of years ago, at least of the same origin, we might say.

Sometimes not only would we find the origin of the new and the complex in the past, but also some reoccurred problems and ideas even without a changed form. That is some problems we and our ancestors or predecessors all shared a part of, some everlasting problems and ideas maybe, among them are the fight with nature, the exploration of our world and the use of earth. Since the appearing of human beings, these problems like tides rushed the shore of our life repeatedly. Take a view of the past, we would find our countable successes accompanied with numerous failures that reminds us we still have a long way to go.

Of course, there are problems we never met and ideas we never had, however, these new problems and ideas of today are not completely strange. If the whole history could be written into a book, there would be only two words between lines in that book, one is success and another is failure. The success of human or a party, the failure of a country or an individual, all of these deal exactly with the efforts we paid and the difficulties we encounter, behind them, it’s the humanity. So if we could understand the humanity of men though a study of the past, we would get an advisable guidance today, facing the complex and the new.

Whenever we find ourselves around with new problems and ideas, we know why we want to this, why we choose to go this way and that is everything you could learn from the past.

1 个别长句子注意。
2 人称问题。一般的规则是尽量使用第三人称（至于是谁定的规则我也不清楚 :p )使文章显得客观。
