The following appeared in a letter from a homeowner to a friend.
"Of the two leading real estate firms in our town—Adams Realty and Fitch
Realty—Adams Realty is clearly superior. Adams has 40 real estate agents; in
contrast, Fitch has 25, many of whom work only part-time. Moreover, Adams'
revenue last year was twice as high as that of Fitch and included home sales that
averaged $168,000, compared to Fitch's $144,000. Homes listed with Adams sell
faster as well: ten years ago I listed my home with Fitch, and it took more than four
months to sell; last year, when I sold another home, I listed it with Adams, and it took
only one month. Thus, if you want to sell your home quickly and at a good price, you
should use Adams Realty."
Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the
argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and
what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.
In the argument, the arguer advocates that Of the two leading real estate firms in our town, Adams Realty is clearly superior to the Fitch Realty. To support his assumption , the arguer compare the agent’s number and tax as well as give us an example of the experience of Homes.
Although plausible might it be at first glance , we can find some deficiencies after careful examinations.
First , assuming that that agents’ number of Adam is more than Fitch can contribute to the conclusion is of entire possibility , but the arguer provides no available to substantiate the crucial assumption. It is extreme possible that scale of the agent of Fitch is bigger than Adam. And even the Adam’s agent is bigger , the agents of Fitch could be of higher efficiency . The arguer’s reasoning , which is unable to convince me that it draw a firm conclusion , is definitely detective .
Secondly ,to support his conclusion , the arguer compare the revenue between Adam and Fitch . Can the comparison contribute to the arguer’s conclusion . Maybe is can , but little . It is likely that housing price of Adam is higher so that its revenue is twice as high as the Fitch’s. And it is possible that Fitch avoid some tax in a legal way . Without ruling out the explanations above , the arguer can not buttress his assumption .
Thirdly , the arguer assumes that the experience of Homes can support his conclusion . Is one example is enough to draw a conclusion ? Unless it can be shown that the experience of Homes is the representative of the all consumers , it is wrong to draw any conclusion at all .Even the it can be the representative , it is still unable to contribute the conclusion . Homes listed his home on Fitch ten years ago and listed on Adam one year ago . Maybe Fitch have developed in a high speed over the nine year. And it is greatly possible that selling the house in a high price is easier than selling it ten years ago. To convince all of us , the arguer must give thorough explanations about the reason why these alternatives is unavailable .
To sum up, the argument mentioned above is unpersuasive as it is not based on valid evidences that contribute to the reasoning . To better evaluate the reliability of the conclusion , the arguer should cite more persuasive evidence , do a survey among more consumers and take more situations in account .
