Issue 81
" Patriotic reverence for the history of a nation often does more to impede than to encourage progress."
Patriotism has become an issue that is keenly discussed all across the world. Although many people assert that patriotic reverence for the history of a nation can be conductive to the country’s progress, there is some people doubt (there are some people doubting) the positive role that patriotism has made. Individually, I am an advocator of the former point of view.
First and foremost, the reverence for the history of a nation is instrumental in establishing a kind of cohesion, which can motivate all the citizens of the country to contribute their energy to the development and prosperity of the country. Just like a football team whose success is achieved by close cooperation between the team members, the development and progress of a country have to be derived from the collaboration of every person of the country, and the collaboration is due to the cohesion mentioned above. The fact that Beijing becomes the host city of the 29th Olympic Games is a case in point. It is estimated that more than 96 percent of Beijing citizens prop up Beijing to be the bidding city, which is the highest supporting rate among all the bidding cities. Besides, all people in Beijing regardless of background or social level (social status) take concrete actions to express their communal wish. Through these actions such as senior people begin to learn English, young people eagerly apply for the jobs of volunteers and so on, Chinese people’s strong racial cohesion and patriotism is reflected expressly. As is known to all, Beijing finally won with the efforts of every person. Therefore, the reverence for the history of a nation is an indispensable factor in a country’s development, because it can arouse the cohesion, which is the strongest power for developing. 举的例子不错,但是通过例子,没有说清楚为何history重要,提供这种作用,只是讲了凝聚力重要。
Moreover, one who has patriotic reverence for the history of its nation must deeply understand the spiritual essence of the race and nation. This kind of understanding can help the people set up the objective recognition of their history, presence, and even future. That is to say every member of the people clearly know what are their virtues, what are their weakness, what mistakes did they make in the past, and what is their communal aim in the future(从句的动词该放到主语后面吧?). Just as Francis Bacon, a British Philosopher, said:” history makes men wise.” Revering and comprehending their own history, can to a large extent help the people avoid some mistakes and lead them to a glorious future. Deng Xiaoping who is the leader of China from 1978 to 1990 can best illustrate my meaning. He reveres and knows China’s history deeply. From his understanding of China’s history, he concludes that only by carrying on economic reform rather than political struggle, can China make great progress. Under his leadership, China has experienced 20 years economic booming which astonishing the world. Hence, the reverence of the history of a nation can help people make wise decisions, which are critical to the progress of a nation or a people.我觉得具体说一下邓怎么从历史中得到启示提出改革比较好?
In sum, I concede that exorbitant patriotism can do some harm to the progress of a nation, but as long as we can set up a healthy conception about patriotism, patriotic reverence for the history of a nation can be converted to a permanent power which can encourage progress of the nation. |
