90. "College students should be encouraged to pursue subjects that interest them rather than seek programs that promise entry into the job market."
3、to some extent,两者并不矛盾,问题的关键在于如何寻求他们的平衡点。
Whether college students should be encouraged to pursue subjects which they are interested in or those that promise entry into the job market is a difficult question. People have different ideas from different aspects. Some assert that interests of subjects is important while others argue that chances of job should be put in the first place. From my point of view, both the factors should be attached important to because they are, to a larger degree, equally and reconcilably useful for a student .
It is known to all that “Interest is the best teacher”. Concerning the purpose of education----foster qualified person who can contribute for the whole society and the whole human being, one can see that such a “best teacher” will effectively lead students to the way to this purpose as well as achievement of their own objectives. For supporting examples one need look no further than these person, from different field and different countries: with the strong interest of science, Thomas Edison invented the first bulb and then the digital and electronic era started; with the strong interest of literature, Goethe had willpower to spend nearly sixty years on the works of Faust; with the strong interest of music, Beethoven composed one of the most glorious and outstanding symphonies---- Fate, overcoming a larger obstacle. All of the success, to some extent, should owe to this great “teacher”, interest. Only do the students pursue the subjects that interested them can they find the way towards success.(这个倒装对吗?)
While the interest is very important, the entry to the job market should not be ignored. Understandably, nobody can survive in such a competitive society without certain income. Can an individual just bend his or her head over what he or she interested in and disregard the real-life problems of survival? Of course not. This reason can be easily explained by Abraham H.Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. This theory suggested that “Body Needs”, nowadays, finding a job to support oneself is a content of which, is the basic need of a people. Because once a people are deprived from food or something necessary, he or she will no longer live, let alone devote to the society or reach success. And “Self Actualization” is a higher need, based on the other lower hierarchies. Accordingly, when crossing the forest towards one’s ideality, a job with certain incoming is just like a gun to hunt for food.
As mentioned above, subjects connecting with either interest or job hunting should be emphasized. The important thing is how to find a balance between the two factors. In my observation, a college should allow students select subjects in which they are interested freely, and at the same time, the college can introduce the students some courses and skills that are advantageous for finding jobs, but not compulsively.
To sum up, without interest, students would lose impetus and they would accomplish nothing in the end; without subjects that promise entry into the job market, they would have nothing to live on or ,at least, live uncomfortably. Thus, it is colleges’ responsibility to assort with them, although it may be a difficult process.
