We have received your application materials and have reviewed your
application. Althought formal official letters offering admission into
the university are sent out at a later date from the office of the
Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (and only after that office has
received originals of all required documents, in cases when these are
not yet present), we in the physics department were favorably impressed
by your application and would be interested in knowing at this stage
the seriousness of your interest in our department.
The terms of the offer we make to entering students are
quite attractive. The amount of the assistantship will be finalized
very soon, but it will be about
$19,500/year plus waiver of tuition. This amount covers the calendar
year and includes summer support that enables one to carry out research
in the summer following the first academic year. Support will
continue in future years, assuming satisfactory progress in studies and
research. Indeed, by that time, many students will be supported by a
research assistantship (R.A.) at comparable rates.
The reason we can offer an assistanship and tuition scholarship at
these rather attractive rates is that our department has been
undertaking an ambitious expansion for the last three years. During
this period the department has hired six high-caliber faculty members.
We plan to hire three to five more faculty members within the next few
years. Our program focuses on correlated electronic systems in
condensed matter physics, including high-Tc superconductivity. Our
external funding level has increased by more than 10 times to over $2M
during the last few years. Our goal is to be as competitive as MIT in
this specific area. Currently we are very strong in high-Tc
superconductors and nanoscience and technology. Recently we have
received major financial support (over 3 million dollars) from the US
Congress to strengthen our physics program, which allows us to attract
high-quality graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.
We have an exceedingly large number of applications this year. We
in the department want to build up our entering class for this fall
with promising students at as early a stage as possible by arriving at
a mutual understanding with students we want to admit before going
throught the bureaucratic formalities of the Graduate School office.
As you well know, you cannot accept more than one offer for graduate
study. If you now have another offer that you have accepted, or are
very likely to accept, we would like to have you tell us that. On the
other hand, if you are still seriously considering our department we
want to know that also.
Therefore, if I do not hear from you by February 21, I will assume you
are no longer considering our department and you will no longer be
considered for admission; other applicants will be considered in
your place.
