Issue 6“The most effective way to understand contemporary culture is to analyze the trends of youth.”

With regard to how to understand contemparory culture, the speaker contends that the most effective way is to analyze the trends of its youth. This point of view is to some extent reasonable, I concede, since by observing the characteristics of the young who indeed reflect and tell much representitive information about the current time, one can generalize many features of an immediate culture. It is not, however, a well-qualified statement that completely take into account all possible aspects that can contribute to the understanding of a culture.

There is no doubt that it makes sense to grasp some of a culture’s main features by taking a look at the youth, because young people are the one who is the most sensitive to fashions and social trends, and they change their behavior, clothes, and even principles in accordance with the current situation they are involved in. The pervasion of Internet is a good instance: nowadays, the life of more and more people become closely related to Internet, either in academic fields, business affairs, or daily life. In this information age, Internet has inevitably become a crucial element of our life, hence an obvious characteristic of the time. There is a survey which indicates that among all the people who frequently surf the Internet, more than 65 percent of them are those who are no more than 30 years’ old, which means that by discovering the fact that young people are very much fond of Internet, you can rightly conclude that it has become a main trend of the world’s culture. There are also other convincing examples, such as the popularity of fastfoods and pop music, which is also representitive as young people’s new taste: fastfoods suggest that the pace of society is in continuous acceleration, and pop music is a simbol of the tendency of universality of the world’s culture.

Although examples above can certainly prove that the youth’s trends can well demonstrate a contermporary culture, it seems too hasty to conclude that it is the most efffective way as the only one to achieve the purpose. Actually, the youth’s trends are sometimes so changeable that it ruins a comprehensive understanding of the culture as a whole, probably because that young people are still in the stage of forging their value systems, thus they are incline to blindly pursue something. Yet, many other approaches are as well avaible, with an equal, or even more effective effect to understand the culture. For example, adults and seniors of a society can provide more useful information. In a sense, they are the producer of a society, or say, a culture; by analyzing their tendency of changes during a relatively long time, one can get a better command of the comprehension of a culture. They cherish certain beliefs and moral principles, which have mostly shaped the configuration of a culture, and they keep them from generation to generation. During this process, some traditions may have altered or lost, yet in the long run, they stay comparatively stable, and they may consequently have positive influence on today’s culture.

These people also preserve many traditional festivals as customs which also can illustrate a culture’s currency, even though they can be traced to hundreds of years ago, or even earlier. Festivals are a good reflection of a culture. Chinese Spring Festival, for instance, has a history of more than a thousand years, but Chinese people nowadays still celebrate the festival, regarding it as the most important day during a whole year. On this day, a family gathers together, having a joyful dinner together, with numerous blessings for each member of the family. This custom shows that Chinese culture values kinship and the well-being of a family very much, no matter how busy its members are, they must come home on the last day of the year, spending such precious time with their parents and other relatives. It never changes.

Before I come to my conclusion, I must point out that these above are not the only ways to understand a contemporary culture, because it is possible to prope many other aspects which are euqally enlightening and thought-provoking. It is untenable to delimit the conclusion within a narrow scope by presenting that to analyze the youth’s trends is the most effective way. Let other useful information contribute to this subject.

观点清楚,语言也没什么大问题

There is no doubt that it makes sense to grasp some of a culture’s main features by taking a look at the youth, because young people are the one who is(are) the most sensitive to fashions and social trends, and they change their behavior, clothes, and even principles in accordance with the current situation they are involved in. The pervasion of Internet is a good instance: nowadays, the life of more and more people become closely related to Internet, either in academic fields, business affairs, or daily life. In this information age, Internet has inevitably become a crucial element of our life, hence an obvious characteristic of the time. There are also other convincing examples, such as the popularity of fastfoods and pop music, which is(are) also representitive(representative笔误啦:P) as young people’s new taste: fastfoods suggest that the pace of society is in continuous acceleration, and pop music is a simbol(symbol) of the tendency of universality of the world’s culture.
论证倒是比较清楚的,就是最后举的两个例子好像太匆忙了,并没有说清楚acceleration和universality就一笔带过了。例子还是要精,论证充分一些

Although examples above can certainly prove that the youth’s trends can well demonstrate a contermporary culture, it seems too hasty to conclude that it is the most efffective way as the only one to achieve the purpose. Actually, the youth’s trends are sometimes so changeable that it ruins a comprehensive understanding of the culture as a whole, probably because that young people are still in the stage of forging their value systems, thus they are incline to blindly pursue something.(我很喜欢这个论点!年轻人的优点同时也是他们的缺点) Yet, many other approaches are as well avaible, with an equal, or even more effective effect to understand the culture. For example, adults and seniors of a society can provide more useful information. In a sense, they are the producer of a society, or say, (of)a culture; by analyzing their tendency of changes during a relatively long time, one can get a better command of the comprehension of a culture. They cherish certain beliefs and moral principles, which have mostly shaped the configuration of a culture, and they keep(maintain) them from(keep sth from是避免的意思) generation to generation. During this process, some traditions may have altered or lost(lost了怎么还能stay stable呢?), yet in the long run, they stay comparatively stable, and they(去掉they) may consequently have positive influence on today’s culture.

本段论证比较充分

These people also preserve many traditional festivals as customs which also can illustrate a culture’s currency, even though they can be traced to hundreds of years ago, or even earlier. Festivals are a good reflection of a culture. Chinese Spring Festival, for instance, has a history of more than a thousand years, but Chinese people nowadays still celebrate the festival(it), regarding it as the most important day during a whole year. On this day, a family gathers together, having a joyful dinner together, with numerous blessings for each member of the family. This custom shows that Chinese culture values kinship and the well-being of a family very much, no matter how busy its members are, they must come home on the last(first) day of the (new)year, spending such precious time with their parents and other relatives. It never changes.(最后的论证不错!)

Before I come to my conclusion, I must point out that these above are not the only ways to understand a contemporary culture, because it is possible to probe many other aspects which are equally enlightening and thought-provoking. It is untenable to delimit the conclusion within a narrow scope by analyzing the youth’s trends. Let other useful information contribute to this subject.(最后一句好像有点Chinglish,而且显得底气不足。
