Issue127
"Facts are stubborn things. They cannot be altered by our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions."事实是不容改变的。它不会由于我们的希望、偏好或者个人的情感而改变

It is indisputable that facts exist objectively, and they cannot be changed by human being's wishes, interests and passions. In every field of our society, we should admit and accept facts, rather than cheating ourselves by negating them. However, the notion the speaker holds overlooks the way we deal with facts which may bring significantly different results.

No one can ignore the importance of facing facts in our quotidian lives. Everyday we must face countless facts, no matter whether we are expecting them or trying to avoid them. Facts do not become better or worse according to our willingness. We can see the fact that traffic accidents occur everyday, killing thousands of people each year. We can see the fact that AIDS prevails all over the world, bringing unutterable pains to those who suffer from it either culpably or innocently. We can see the fact that the depletion of atmospheric ozone, caused by environmental pollution, has warmed the Earth significantly and is threatening the survival of human beings. All these are the truths that we do not want to see but are actually in front of us. Had we resist to accept these facts most of which are result from ourselves rather than to face them and make our efforts to solve these problems, the conditions will be terribly deteriorated and we will be bound to suffer more pains.

In the field of science, it is also essential to use facts, or to say, the empirical evidences or the results of experiment to justify and conclude scientific theories. Anyone who subjectively draws some conclusion from ones own wondering or intension will inexorably end in with failure by attaining wrong concept or principles. Even if the conclusion is theoretically right, it must be tested with the help of practice. The famous experiment of Pisa Tower, taken by Galileo, vigorously proved that all the things that are at the same height fall down to ground with the same time, regardless of their weights. In front of the fact that two iron balls with different sizes drop onto ground simultaneously, people realized the previous concept that heavier object drops faster than the lighter one is groundless.

However, admitting that we cannot alter facts with our willingness does not mean we have nothing to do with facts. The different way we look at facts and deal with them often brings about different outcomes from facts. John Maynard Keynes, the British economist, once said:" Jovons saw the kettle boil and cried out with the delighted voice of a child; Marshal too had seen the kettle boil and sat down silently to build an engine." From his words we can see that, if we try our best to think of something behind the fact – the cause, the principles and the potential benefits – we may find a lot of useful things from it. Otherwise fact is just valueless thing to us. To some extent, the recognition and exploration towards fact is equally important with fact in itself. Our intelligence can change the outcome of dealing with facts.

In sum, anyone who wants to avoid certain pains by intending to change and even negate the facts will ultimately gain more pains. We should accept and respect facts with objectivity. At the same time, positive attitudes and active thoughts help us to gain a great deal from the unchangeable facts.

It is indisputable that facts exist objectively, and they cannot be changed by human being's wishes, interests and passions. In every field of our society, we should admit and accept facts, rather than cheating (cheat)ourselves by negating them. However, the notion the speaker holds overlooks the way we deal with facts which (指代什么?way?facts?)may bring (+ about)significantly different results.

No one can ignore the importance of facing facts in our quotidian (看上去挺帅的)lives. Everyday we must face countless facts, no matter whether we are expecting them or trying to avoid them. Facts do not become better or worse according to our willingness. We can see the fact that traffic accidents occur everyday, killing (前面是每天,后面是每年,这个伴随是不是能用?吃不准)thousands of people each year. We can see the fact that AIDS prevails all over the world, bringing unutterable pains to those who suffer from it (them)either culpably or innocently. We can see the fact that the depletion of atmospheric ozone, caused by environmental pollution, has warmed the Earth significantly and is threatening the survival of human beings. All these are the truths that we do not want to see but are actually in front of us. Had we resist to accept these facts most of which are (好像不用be动词)result from ourselves rather than to face them and make our efforts to solve these problems, the conditions (太泛了,最好具体一点)will (是想用虚拟?那就是would)be terribly deteriorated and we will be bound to suffer more pains.(这段意思说生活中我们必须直面事实,而且基本是不好的事实)

In the field of science, it is also essential to use facts, or to say, the empirical evidences or the results of experiment to justify and (是否要加to?)conclude scientific theories. Anyone who subjectively draws some conclusion from ones (one's)own wondering or intension will inexorably end in with failure by attaining wrong concept or principles(有点绝对,最好加个in some cases之类的). Even if the conclusion is theoretically right, it must be tested with the help of practice. The famous experiment of (of是不是不对?觉得不通,还是有这个固定用法?)Pisa Tower, taken by Galileo, vigorously (放在这不大恰当吧) proved that all the things that are at the same height fall down to ground with (during, in?)the same time, regardless of their weights. In front of the fact that two iron balls with different sizes (前面是weight,后面是size?)drop onto ground simultaneously, people realized the previous concept that heavier object drops faster than the lighter one is groundless.
(这段讲科学上事实出真知,最后在补充强调一下不根据主观愿望就更好了)
However, admitting that we cannot alter facts with our willingness does not mean we have nothing to do with facts. The different way we look at facts and deal with them often brings about different outcomes from facts. John Maynard Keynes, the British economist, once said:" Jovons saw the kettle boil and cried out with the delighted voice of a child; Marshal too had seen the kettle boil and sat down silently to build an (+steam?)engine." (这段引言不错,不过是否应该加个 I paraphrase?)From his words we can see that, if we try our best to think of something behind the fact – the cause, the principles and the potential benefits – we may find a lot of useful things from it. Otherwise fact is just valueless thing (不要) to us. To some extent, the recognition and exploration towards fact is equally important with fact in (不要) itself. Our intelligence can change the outcome of dealing with facts.(这段讲事实不能改变,但我们却可从中受益)

In sum, anyone who wants to avoid certain pains by intending to change and even negate the facts will ultimately gain more pains. We should accept and respect facts with objectivity(好像有点别扭,是不是用个副词就行了?) . At the same time, positive attitudes and active thoughts help us to gain a great deal from the unchangeable facts.
