What society thought to be its greatest social, political, and individual achievements have often resulted in the greatest discontent.

Some achievements, no matter they are in the field of politics or science; made by an individual or a group, contribute to the society to a so large degree that they are thought as the greatest achievements; however, the influences of them over the society seem not all positive. Someone argues that such greatest achievements always lead to the greatest discontent. In my opinion, it is undeniable that they often cause discontent in the society, nonetheless, their contributions to the society cannot be neglected.

On the one hand, one characteristic of the greatest achievements is that they influence the society considerably in many aspects; sometimes they even lead to a revolution in society. For example, the discovery of the America made by Columbus is one of the greatest individual achievements in human history, because it has changed the developing directions of economy, political system, and human culture greatly through the industrial revolution it stimulated later. Additionally, the triumph of the Allies in the World War Two is another greatest achievement in politics for it prevented the human society from being ruled by an autocratic government of Racism and Fascism. To sum up, the effects on the human society of the achievement determine the significance of it.  

On the other hand, however, the great changes brought by these achievements tend to break the conventions of the society and harm the interests of the majority. Thus, they always stir up the greatest discontent in society. To illustrate this point, the early phase of the industrial revolution is a good case. In this phase a great number of new machines were invented, increasing the productivity as well as contributing to the development of science significantly. It is undoubtedly that these inventions deserve to be viewed as the greatest achievements in history. However, the general use of these machines in production led to a problem of unemployment for the factories did not need so many workers any more, then resulting in a severe discontent among workers. They vented their dissatisfaction by sabotaging the machines, which were viewed as the roots of their unemployment and poverty. From this case we can see that the greatest achievements are inevitably be detested because their influences upon the society tend to conflict with the present interests of most people.

Although people always hold negative attitudes towards the greatest achievements of the society, the significance of these achievements is undeniable for without them the development of our society will stagnate. For example, if the use of machines had been stopped owing to the opposition of workers, we would still live in solitary villages and have to sew our clothes by ourselves, let alone enjoying the prosperity of modern industry. Therefore, although the greatest achievements often lead to controversies and discontent, we should affirm their importance in the history of human beings instead of denying it.

In conclusion, the greatest achievements of a society are conducive to the development and well-being of the society in the long run, although they often result in the greatest discontent.
