6. High-speed electronic communications media, such as electronic mail and television, tend to prevent meaningful and thoughtful communication. 【151】
The speaker asserts that high-speed electronic communications media intend to prevent meaningful and thoughtful communication. While the speaker's assertion seems reasonable to some extent, in final analysis, I cannot wholeheartedly agree with the speaker because he(she) oversimplifies the concept of communication.
First of all, there is a necessity give a clear definition of communication. Then, communication should include two folds of meaning: (1) person-to-person communication in the real world. This kind of communication might complete in the way of face-to-face talking, chatting on phone line, writing e-mail on Internet, and so forth. (2) Idea communication. This kind of communication possible happens striding across the distance between contemporary world and one period of history. For example, we can communicate with Aristotle by reading his thinking article.
One the one hand, if communication the speaker mentioned above belongs to the first definition, then I would strongly disagree with the speaker's claim. Because high-speed electronic communications media do not prevent meaningful and thoughtful communication, conversely, they improve the efficiency this kind of communication. In Middle Age, It takes several days to deliver a letter even if the receiver is not far away. However, now, one would receive a letter with the same content as the letter mentioned above in several minutes even if the letter is delivered from China to America. High-speed electronic communications media are just tools used to express individuals' views. Whether this communication is meaningful and thoughtful or not depends on the individual's attitude when he(she) using these tools. If one just writes some useless words when he chooses e-mail to deliver it, if a person just concerns with the image on TV. instead of considering the stories behind these images, then highly effective communicative tools tend to prevent meaningful and thoughtful communication all the same. In contrast, if people express their ideas meaningfully and thoughtfully, these tools would function in boosting better communication.
On the other hand, if communication in the speaker's assertion means "idea communication" discussed above, then high-speed electronic communications media indeed intend to prevent meaningful and thoughtful communication. Because these high-speed communicative tools might lead to this circumstance in which people depend on tools so much as to ignore the significance of thinking. For example, recently, a plethora of education experts worried about the declining of students' writing and reading abilities, and they point out that the American students often just satisfy with visual images on television, and, they are inclined to download from the Internet when writing some things. Consider, now, when people are satisfied with those words from the Internet, when individuals spend so much time on television, they could have spent enough time reading books in which they can communicate with Aristotle, Shakespeare, and so forth. As Sarah Fielding once described (I paraphrase): on the wings of fancy, gentle readers, bear yourself into the mid-air, where by imagination you may form a large castle in which each communication always spur the spark of ideas. However, the problem is that high-speed electric communications media fail to steer individuals towards the castle.
In sum, high-speed communications media play different roles in different definitions of communication. In the field of person-to-person communication, they boost meaningful and thoughtful communication. And in the field of "idea communication", there is nothing more preventing meaningful and thoughtful communication.
