81"Patriotic reverence for the history of a nation often does more to impede than to encourage progress."
正文:
I maintain that the above statement is somewhat extreme .In my point of view, rational patriotic reverence for the history of a nation usually encourages the progress to that country rather than hinder it.
Patriotic reverence can make the citizenry unified and consequently improve the condition of a nation-to overcome difficulties and promote prosperity. Since people growing in one country often receive similar cultivation, they have comparable belief, love and reverence to their motherland, which united them together and hence uphold the cohesion of a country. Just as an old adage says:" Great power exists in the collectivity." A country of strong consistency often undergoes a more rapid progress than one whose populace is not concerned about their nation's development but just cares for their own profits, for the reason that people usually boost the morale and energy to devote when they love what they contribute for. Assuming that citizenries all pursue for their own interests and let their country's benefits aside, then how can such a nation organize and manage its normal running? So patriotism in this sense is very positive, even important to a country's progress.
Also, people have the responsibility and obligation to love and respect their motherland. People may can no longer live on the earth for the possible forthcoming invasion, plague, natural disaster, and so forth, if it were not for the protection they get from their country. When benefiting from their motherland, citizenry also should turn back to behave on their nation's behalf. Only through this can the country and the citizenry continue to be reciprocal to each other. For supporting example, people need look no further than the terrorism occurred in 9.11 in the US, many inhabitants offer their effort as much as possible to help victims to conquer this tragedy and maintain the peace of society, and hence successfully protect the country from probable further counterwork, and this in turn contributes to their own security. On the contrary, do citizenry not love their country, and then the latter is a dark society with little hope, just like a plate with incompact sand which has little productive effect.
However, irrational patriotic reverence for a country, chauvinism for example, will do great harm to the nation rather than the least good. In the World War II, chauvinism was prevalent in France, Germany, Japan and some other nations. All these countries suffered much from such kind of thought, not mention the term of material, the spirit of such country got striking impact, especially the children and teenagers whose minds were just developing at that time, in that chauvinism encourage individuals blind patriotism and sightless superiority toward some special groups which help to develop a malformed personality .One can find this kind of thoughts on some old people even in current days ,which indicate that its far-reaching influence .
To summarize, for their interests of a country, people need and even must venerate their motherland which is beneficial to both themselves and their nation. However, blind patriotism should not be encouraged , for it do no good to the society. |
