176"The function of science is to reassure; the purpose of art is to upset. Therein lies the value of each."
Though it is detrimental to attribute specific functions and purposes to knowledge, especially at higher level of understanding, since both science and art form the same sphere of knowledge, the issue at hand is certainly some worth contemplating. Indeed, the function of science is reassure (to reassure) and the purpose of art is, to some extent, upset. Hence each has its own worth albeit in a limited way.
Science, in one sense, has the meaning of 'knowledge' accumulated from experience. (觉得这句话有改进的余地) In other sense, it is the pursuit of truth behind the phenomena through experimentation and study. The very genesis of science upholds these definitions. In the primordial stages of human civilizations, eastern or western, man was intrigued by the phenomena of nature such as lightening, earthquakes etc. These phenomena, as they were mysteries to the man of those times, remained dreadful to man. Man, the rational animal (Human, as an intellect creature), honed his intellect to get emboldened and gain vigor. The rationalization for these phenomena resulted ultimately in philosophy and understanding of these resulted in science. Thus, the very purpose of science has been and is (has been and is不知道这里对不对,还望指教) to remove the fears of man about the 'unexplained'. The concept of electricity has removed the fear of lightning, and the concept of human morphology and medicine and that of disease are a few examples.
Quite surprisingly, the value of science gets tainted once it starts threatening (threatening effects appears). The unwanted by-products of science such as pollution, nuclear weapons, and destruction to environment countermand the very purpose for which science has been rightfully created. None can deny the fact that this perversion of science has diluted the (true) value of it. It is quite evident that science is now a tool that creates (is now used to create) fear instead of removing it.
On the other hand, art has altogether a different reason to be created (art also has something in its favors). It is the manifestation of human feelings in the physical form. It is not just the feeling of sadness. In fact art is created for recreation. It has been and is a leisure time activity to reduce the tensions of man both in ancient and in modern times. All forms of art including music, dance, literature, and painting are designed to enliven, not to dampen, the spirit. In this aspect if its purpose is to upset, it is against rationality and common sense.
Still we should not undervalue the importance of melancholy depicted the by art. If it depicts state of hunger, poverty, brutality, it does upset but with divine purpose of enlightening. If so, who can deny its sociological, humanitarian worth? In such instances the artist makes the society to rethink its ideals and move towards a more humane existence. Sometimes, the creative mind of the artist acts as a vent for the suppressed feelings of the artist who throws a pathetic scene on canvas. Yet at other times the canvas can portray emotions and feelings that lighten the spirit. Its worth to the individual in this case is insurmountable.
Finally considering these, we can conclude that science definitely should reassure but art can upset under the stated condition as they are aimed at both individual and social
development. (515 words)
