“Success, whether academic or professional, involves an ability to survive in a new environment and, eventually, to change it.”
As is universally known, every success of endeavor forms and realizes in a certain environment. Many people hold that people who succeed should survive in a new environment and finally change it. As far as I am concerned, I strongly agree with the former statement that surviving in new surroundings is a paramount characteristic of success while, changing it seems somewhat impractical.
To begin with, we should make sure that success can be fit for the new environment. Adaptive nature of success ensures the survival, while success that is maladaptive to the new environment will eventually left behind by the history and truth. Comparing the success to the certain species in Darwin's evolving principle, we can apparently work out that if the species cannot survive the new environment, even though they appeared so adaptive to the previous environment that they were living the best lives before, they will still become extinct in the new surroundings. The case also does well in success-if the environment changes in itself, let us say the alteration of conditions, the mistake result from the incorrect operation, and the like, in which success cannot sustain itself, in other words, it does not adaptive any longer, success will disappear without trace. Thus, once it is called success, it does involve the ability to survive in a new environment.
On the other hand, changing the new environment is actually difficult for success itself, whether academic or professional. On the academic level, such as in the scientific experiment, people who achieve success in fact just fit for the research environment rather than change it. New frontier may turn up and makes the success which performs excellently before try to suit the new condition, but can we expect the success will finally change the new frontier to the old one or another? Of course cannot. Hence, changing the environment is not realistic. On the professional level, people who can survive in an ever-changed environment can be regarded as successful, while changing it is still idealistic. Taking executives for example, executives in corporations should have the ability to survive in the ever-changed marketing environment and only the ability to live on. The marketing environment is determined by the whole society economy not by a certain successful executives. Thus, we cannot expect to change such overall environments at all.
In addition, we should consider that changing the environment according to our own standard is actually impractical. Some people hold the point of view that altering the environment to which they incline will boost the development of the success, while they overlook the feasibility the action. The competence and ability to change the environment of every individual alone in the society is negligible, insofar as the environment embodies the whole power of the society. As we cannot change the natural laws of the earth traveling around the sun and we cannot change the principle of the economic development, depending on certain successful individual, changing the environment turns out to be too impractical. As a result, success can just involve the ability to survive in the ever-changed environment.
In sum, successful people should undoubtedly have the ability to adapt to the new environment, however frequently it changed. And meanwhile, expecting to change it is impractical which will offer no conduce to success, and furthermore will ruin the success. |
