Do you agree or disagree with the statement: When making major purchase (for example, car or laptop), our decisions can be influenced by different sources of information. Explain how each of the following sources of information can influence your decision.
Because various sources of information can affect our decision, people are always hesitant when making a major purchase such as car or laptop. Based on my experience, there are at least three factors that can influence our judgment and make a shopping a hard test.
First, ads. Apparently, product's ads are the most influential power through which the mind of potential customers can be shaped. Ads can not only embellish the outlook or the quality of products, but even possible to encourage people to buy something they actually do not need. On the other hand, because ads are aimed to improve the sales of products, they usually intend to exaggerate the advantages of products and conceal or understate the disadvantages. In that way, ads can often change our decision by shifting our attention to product's merit and ignoring its defect. For instance, if you just watch one car’s ads without a chance to see and use the real car, you might be attracted by its gentle curve and beautiful color. However, if you drive the car personally, you may find that the interior of the car is much worse than its outlook and the power is not strong enough as you expected. Those defects were not shown in the ads, so customers are deceived to some extent.
Another important source to influence our decision is the opinion and comment from others, especially someone we familiar with, friends, for instance. In this occasion, we always apt to consider others point of view as valuable one because they after all have contacted with the product directly. I planned to buy an iphone6 since my old cell phone stopped working. However, I abandoned that thought after an inquiry with one of my friends who already brought one and was not satisfied with its new system, IOS8. Besides, he also warned me that the iphone6's battery was not as powerful as what Apple told customers. As the result, I changed my mind and brought a GalaxyS5 instead.
The third factor is the changing price of a product. It is a common situation people meet frequently: in the beginning, you think the price is not commensurate with product's true value when product's price is relatively high. However, you may change your mind after the price is reduced even if the quality of product is not improved at all. In this case, while neither the quality nor people's requirement changed, a reduced price is still the most powerful factor to affect customer's decision.
According to the discussion above, ads, opinion from others and a reduced price may potentially change people's decision when they get involved in a purchase. Those are part of reasons why we always hesitant when facing numerous products and need to extract valuable resources from so many information.
