春节期间，我将分析3组由HJ版主帮我收集的习作，每组4-5篇。这些习作的作者最终都没有拿到4分，因此我的点评主要关注他们的常见问题，希望大家引以为鉴。习作点评部分被隐藏起来，主要是希望大家可以先动笔思考一下这道题，在回复中写一个提纲或者全文再来看。

45) Competition for high grades seriously limits the quality of learning at all levels of education.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.

遇到这道题应该感到很庆幸，因为这种教育类的题目我们都有经历，可以写的内容也很多。 但是，这并不代表一定能拿到高分。在这里我分析论坛上4位网友的习作，指出他们的优点和问题。在看这些分析之前，我建议大家先思考一下这道题你会怎么写，可以在回复中附上自己的提纲或者全文，再来看我的点评或许收获更大。



习作01

The perception of competition is deeply embedded at almost all levels of education in order to stimulate spontaneous acquisition of knowledge and continuous pursuit of self-improvement.  However, applying grade only as the universal and overbearing standard may seriously limit the quality of learning.

这位同学的开头段的第二句在提出观点的时候没有提到原题里的一个关键词competition，这是一个很致命的问题-“忽略题目的关键概念”，如果作者按照这个主旨句来展开全文的话，这篇文章就必然走题了。 虽然作者有回应all levels of education和limit the quality of learning，但忽略competition这种错误是不可原谅的。


First and foremost, it is not difficult to recognize that people are born with distinctive characteristics and gifts, some of which can be quantitatively evaluated under our educational system while others are not.  Given great incongruity towards a common education benchmark, no one could ever come up with a comprehensive examination that effectively translates all aspects of talents into clear-cut grades. Resulting from the lack of an overall perspective, all examinations and grades are inevitably biased towards a particular group of people to some extent, which apparently harms the interests of the rest.  For instance, children gifted in dancing are far less likely to be highly appreciated under a score system than those naturally inclined to reading and writing.

这段话读完之后我不太明白作者的中心意思是什么。这是一个很常见的问题，就是作者在写一段话之前没有想好这段话主要想说什么以及想说的的内容和题目的关联在哪里。题目关注的是competition for grades 会否限制quality of learning
这段话给人的感觉是在讨论考试这种工具的局限和不公平，可以说合题目要求风马牛不相及。

因此这段的问题包括

1)  忽略题目的关键概念
2) 中间段缺乏明确的重点
3)  中间段讨论的内容与题目关联不紧密

Another undesirable consequence from competition for high grades is that students may turn out to be racing against instead of cooperating with each other during the learning process.  With a transparent grading system that ranks all from the top to bottom, people tend to be strongly instigated to "move" upper in order to gain an advantage over others in applying to schools, job-hunting and so on.  As a result, it is not hard to imagine a case where someone deliberately imposes difficulties on his fellow classmates because failing others benefits himself in some way.  This destructive competition apparently does harm to the overall learning quality and contradicts sharply to company and society's demands for cooperative members and citizens.

啊，作者终于想起来要讨论competition了！ 这段的内容比起上段来说和题目关联比较紧密了，主要是因为作者抓住了几个关键词，competition for grades以及quality of learning。作者也提出了一种可能性即为了好的成绩而去“ imposes difficulties on his fellow classmates”。但是，作者并没有具体讨论如何impose difficulties，以致这个例子很单薄，缺少具体的细节，究竟会如何 does harm to the overall learning quality，读者无法了解。因此这里的问题是没有提供细节支持论点。如果作者尝试去提供细节的时候，也会发现这个点其实不太好写，因为为了成绩而去破坏他人学习的情况其实还是挺少见的。



Admittedly, competition fosters enthusiastic endeavors towards perfection.  From time to time, we have witnessed Olympic candidates driven by the ever-lasting pursuit towards "higher, faster and stronger" performances.  The strong impulse to outwit another, if guided correctly, could play a significant role in alluring students to conquer challenging problems.  Nowadays, however, when diversity and cooperation are least equally important as intelligence and competition, in no way could a single high grade satisfy the ultimate goal of education.

在最后一个中间段，作者写了一个让步，指出竞争的好处，然后又指出多元化与合作也很重要。这段话同样存在前面提到的 忽略题目的关键概念以及中间段讨论的内容与题目关联不紧密的问题。同时也体现出另一个普遍存在的问题：受了李建林5.5分的误导，使用所谓的正反正或最后让步的结构模板以致文章的中间段之间出现自相矛盾的观点。

To conclude, while competing for high grades can encourage students' learning behaviors to some degree, diversification and cooperation should not be neglected by educators.  Without a scientific grading system that can incorporate various aspects of talents and prevent destructive competition, it requires great discretion when competition for grades is instituted to stimulate learning.

总的来说，作者的语言表达能力还是不错的，没有什么明显的语法错误。但是由于在内容上存在以上讨论的问题，4分是肯定拿不到的。

However, I would argue that competition on grades may play a more positive role in elementary schools where one mainly accumulate basic knowledge, while it can be an obstacle for higher levels of education.

这段的两个关键词是 practice和correction 但是Meanwhile之后的篇幅和前面似乎不太平衡
总的来说已经写得不错 因为你基础很好 所以要求也应该高一些



In the next phase of study, for example in high schools, the pressure and time consumption brought by the grade competition will definitely limit the quality of learning. In high schools, students should dig deeper in their learning based on their interests to get them really inspired, which is time consuming but key to the quality of learning. Unfortunately, it doesn't help much on the grade. Competition of high grades takes too much time especially from students who are about to take the college entrance examination. In China, the students in the last year of high school, spend more than 12 hours preparing for the final competition for college. Not only is the great opportunity of education in shining adolescent years wasted on meaningless repetition, but are students hurt both physiological and psychological.

这段的中心似乎不太突出 前面讲的是students should dig deeper in their learning based on their interests to get them really inspired 这个点和 quality of learning之间的关联需要进一步的解释 而到了后面 这个点就不见了 转而讨论因为应试而shining adolescent years wasted on meaningless repetition
好的段落应该做到前后呼应 就是有一条主要的线索贯穿始终 而你这一段似乎缺少一个明确的中心  


After entering the college, grades should serve more like a self check for students and it makes little sense to compete on grades. In college, students should be evaluated more comprehensively, and the ability to come up with new ideas and to make them come true is much more precious than a straight A transcript or a first place in ranking. Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerburg, as the greatest heroes in high tech, both dropped from Harvard, quitting the meaningless competition for grades and pursuing for great ideas in their mind. If they chose to be obsessed in the competition for higher grades with the peers, there wouldn't be Windows and Facebook in the world at all.


这段的例子已经偏离的题目的主题 quality of learning；这两个dropout的故事或许和事业成功有关，但是和学习的质量关联在哪里呢？ 这是一个很常见的问题，就是使用一些经典的例子，勉强用在具体的题目上，结果却忽略了题目中的关键问题

In short, the competition for higher grades helps a lot to improve the quality of learning in the starting phase of education, where repetition and correction is crucial. But in higher levels of education, the pressure and time comsuption braught by the competition are unfortunately limiting the learning quality, not to mention the potential bury of great ideas.


我觉得你可以明确地分小学、中学和大学来写
小学不宜竞争 因为小朋友不懂何谓竞争 而且心理承受能力也有限 所以很难motivate  

中学应该竞争 因为考大学压力很大 需要motivate

大学不应该竞争 因为大学里合作更重要 举一些具体的例子  

除了第一个中间段外 后面两个的讨论都偏离了题目的核心问题 whether competition for grades affects quality of learning

Many students are trained to be followers to the reference answers in the tedious repetition of preparation. In most cases, they are not encouraged to cast doubt on questions or reference answers, otherwise, they are thought to be wasting their time or even taking risk in the examination.

根据老师的意见，这段的主要论点改成了对independent thinking的损害，逻辑是竞争带来了很大的压力，导致学生只能按照考官的思虑思考，没有太多的机会提出疑问或是不同的观点，导致学习质量的下降。

Sense of cooperation should be instilled to improve the quality of learning by the gradual fading away of the competition. After entering the college, students usually have a lot more homework or projects which are assigned to a team rather than the single person. They are encouraged not to take grades too seriously, but to focus more on the success of the team. Students in a team will learn the importance of cooperation and have more chance to exchange ideas in the brainstorming, which will definitely improve the quality of learning. On the contrary, if a student is obsessed in the sense of competition and want to always stay on the top of ranking, will finally get frustrated since nobody can be the best at everything. One of the sad stories for such students is a Chinese girl in Sloan school of business, MIT. In her suicide note, she was so frustrated to find that Chinese is the only thing she could do better than her classmates. So indulged in competition, she lost her life and opportunity to learn.


恩，这段的确偏的有些厉害了，看来找经典的例子一定要切合主线，不能简单堆砌，要说明例子和主旨的逻辑关系。这个改过的例子看起来好一点，不过人挂了好像有点猛。。。

根据王老师的要求，写一点这篇文章相关的思考过程，觉得对自己也挺有帮助的。

先写一点我对Competition for higher grades那道题目的思考过程吧。可能对自己也是一个总结。读了之前您的几篇范文，我很同意分类讨论是对于我们这种文笔不是很好的同学很有用的思路，这样可以尽量的归纳一些例子用到各种题目当中，减少用词的难度。所以一开始的思路就是找分类。

因为issue还远没达到计时写作的程度，我是一边开着百度查资料一边写的：） 针对这道题目我一开始的重点是找到quality of learning的定义，然后就找到了开头第一句的分类，基础知识，知识的应用和创新。所以就想按照这种分类来讨论，competition在这三种学习当中的作用，但是后来发现很难找到很specific的例子。遂决定从小学，中学，大学谈起。

自我感觉，小学的那部分就像老师所说的，写得还行，虽然没有非常特别的例子，但是逻辑还过得去。中学和大学就有点思路跳跃了，基本就是想说中学里应该是对某些学科培养深入兴趣的时候，但是准备考试高分又占用了太多的时间，使得没有足够的时间深入学习。所以是负面的影响。大学里应该是培养创新能力，不能为了考试葬送那些好点子。

写完之后看了之前的点评，我觉得独立思考的能力是很好的一个点，因为考试更多是适应出题者的思路而不是发挥自己的思路。总体来说，我的一个难点是很难找到specific的例子，特别是历史上或者名人的例子说明我的观点，我甚至去搜了一点美国教育发展的历史。。。。因为之前看了cracking the new GRE的issue部分的说明，还是觉得考官熟悉的例子会加分很多，所以恶补美国历史ing。另外1+3模式的确是短时间内写作的一个好方法，很容易写出自己的模板啊。

另外合作也是一个点，我在分析题目的时候还是忽略了competition的反面是合作共赢。我觉得对于Argument，很容易按照老师的步骤分析claim，reason。但是对于issue，因为题目字数太少，一个理解的不到位，就很容易出现偏差，希望老师能总结一些实用的或者常见的题目的分析流程。比如这道题，看到competition就要想到cooperation，看到learning就要想到independent thinking。而且我在写issue的时候一个不好的习惯就是总在脑子和自己辩论，比如会问自己，合作和competition是可以同时存在的啊，为什么竞争了就不能合作了呢。。。。脑残

从昨天开始看了老师的点评之后，感觉这道题看似容易，却非常容易写跑题，之前自己的思考也是跑题了。 昨天尝试写，但是到现在也没有写完，写作的时候总想找到较好的思路，因此下笔很是困难，就像楼上ee_stone说的“在脑子里和自己辩论”。

这道题，the quality of learning的确是一个有些抽象的概念，我搜索之后将它定义为“学习者学习的意愿和付出的努力，以及将知识运用于实际的能力”。然后也是分情况讨论，对于枯燥知识的记忆，竞争高分的竞赛可以作为促进学习的一种方法。对于理解和创新知识，竞争高分不利于知识的理解和运用，不利于提高学习质量；竞争高分不利于创新。

额，另外，@ee_stone，我觉得关于合作的例子还是没有说明合作是如何提高the quality of learning的，即提高你定义的the quality of learning的那个方面，我觉得如果说明了这一点会更好。

嗯嗯，多谢评论，王老师看过之后也是这个感觉，我也想再改一下，这篇和另外一篇102的题目其实很有代表性，估计能涉及到20道左右题库里面的题目，的确值得好好练习。

In the next level of education, aggressive competition for higher grades will somehow block the exchange of ideas and weaken the sense of cooperation. In the modern world, since the expertise and theories are getting much more complicated than ever before, very few people can achieve great things all by themselves. Over 80% percent of Nobel prize winners in the latest 25 years worked in cooperation to make these great discoveries happen, which shows the great power of cooperation and the exchange of ideas. On the contrary, students obsessed in competition for higher grades will be reluctant to tell his ideas to other students, worrying that peers will steal their ideas and get higher grades while losing the opportunity to get inspired by others' ideas. The quality of learning of these students will thus be limited by the scope of everyone's own understanding.

The way for seeking ideas is highlighted in the quality of education. Children in elementary school  with great curiosity may not strictly follow the way teachers hold and their mind are full of sparkly ideas which are precious for human beings. Competition for high grades may stifle their creativity and potentiality,because a force-fed pedagogy may achieve a high score but damp a great mind.  小孩子天性使然，高分竞争的确会影响其潜力发挥,安迪生的例子

The best education is teach people to know oneself. This process can be obtained after several years study and other social activities. It usually began to shape during adolescent, the process when we are in university. Students in university should be fully aware of themselves and respondent for themselves and they have various type of competitions.The only goal for high grade is not practicable。大学生有不同的目标，创业，社团等。相同的高分目标会影响人格的塑造。

看了ee_stone的思考过程感觉思路更打开了。一般提到大学教育，更多的是想到科研能力或批判思维无法用分数衡量之类，competition和cooperation的切入点很赞。

TS1高中分数竞争如何不淹没才能感觉还是有点想不通；TS3讲到大学高分竞争影响人格塑造是不是有点偏了，这和quality of learning好像不太沾边

哦哦 我是想把高中分数竞争当做一种学习能力的体现，不知道这样的说法会不会好一点TAT
谢谢小伙伴提醒，大学教育这里的确有点偏，如果要是从“认识你自己”的角度呢？其实还是对quality of learning 有些不太懂TAT
