刚收到HKU MscEcon, 拿出来与南洋理工AE比一比，征求一下大家意见

2.另外，我想特别问一下经济学硕士转管理学博士的问题。请问亲的同学或者学长学姐里有没有这种状况的呢？听说经济学硕士申请管理博士还是有优势的，但是我不清楚，这里所说的经济学硕士，是指research的那种，还是coursework的这种.......

coursework 和 research master的分別:
1. 最最重要的是, research master有thesis. this is a very good preparation for PhD research. if one go to HKU Mecon and plan to do PhD afterwards (a rare stuffs), one should consider the dissertation option (eqv 2 course) serious
2. one year vs two year, and class size. in general, a research master is longer, i.e. more time for preparation, and more oppotunity to communicate with professor as the class size is much small. and thus it is very common for 1-year master student to do a RA for a year first.
3. class size, and thus signal effect. the selective / competitive admission to an MPhil is also a +ve signal.


a note on the title: HKU one is not a MSc, but a Master in Economics (MEcon) instead.

你好 我想问一下 我也拿到港大经济学的offer了，授课型的master，但因为我之前已经交了CUHK酒店旅游与房地产管理专业的留位费，现在纠结放弃cuhk去hku值不值得。
按照我父母的意思是他们有名校情结，觉得港大的经济学硕士说出去很厉害，我也知道港大的名气确实很大，可是我觉得cuhk也不差啊，并且我以后是希望能留港工作的，并不想继续读下去了

我看你的留言，应该是很有经验的，可不可以对我的困扰提下建议啊

different major & different University: you are changing two variables at the same time.

P.S.
1. in general, HKU MEcon is far far from enough in preparation for further study. at the end, the core are at senior undergraduate level only.
2. "酒店旅游与房地产管理" and "经济学" leads to quite different career path indeed.......I (and indeed no one) should be able to choose this instead of you yourself.
3. the general reputation of HKU is slightly better than CUHK, though in term of business school it is rather the reverse; but both difference is insignificant in terms of job hunting.
