金工选校求建议： HKUST vs. UMichi

拿到这两个金数的AD，但比较纠结。。想请教一下大家的看法~

自己分析优劣势如下:
HKUST
优：
费用便宜；
地理位置稍好(相比ann arbor...)；
学校在大陆的认可度应该还不错吧？

劣：
招的人貌似挺多，会不会比较水？

UMichi
优：
一年半的项目，数学统计合办的，课程比较丰满，而且可以选修金融，计算机的课程；
招的人比较少，2，30的样子吧；

劣：
地理位置到底还是比较纠结吧，感觉没有什么留美工作的可能性？。。他们家之前那个mfe好像就是因为就业太差关掉了？
第一年的项目不知道会不会当小白鼠。。

因为觉得留美可能性不大，以后还是打算回大陆工作，目前比较偏向做买方，想请教一下两个学校哪个更合适？包括两所学校在国内的认可度？希望大家给点意见哈~谢谢大家啦~

Why HKUST for sure?

Univ of Michigan has definitely a better reputation. Plus if you are concerning about the rank, U of M is ranked higher than HKUST.

Btw, your GT and GPA look good. You'd have a chance getting into better schools/programs.

Much thanks for the advice! I'm still waiting for admissions from better ones, though very likely to end up with these two.

kind of:
UMichigan VS HKUST
(addition reputation + chances to stay US) VS (lower tuition + chances to stay HK)

give the location and historial record, chance to stay US is small enough to be neglible...
i.e. it is kind of "buying a better reputation" with higher tuition cost, and forgoing a better location (with easier access to job market in HK)

and since MFE is a career-oriented program.............it is quite normal to weight more on the location + ROI instead of reputation (which cannot be eaten......the difference dont worth that much i will say.)

P.S. ranking is nothing, OP can forgot about that.

Totally understood what you are saying.

However, many people think Michigan is a bad place for quant jobs since it's far away from NYC/Chicago, but Univ of Michigan is still a target school for many IBs and local firms given the reputation and quality of education. Still, the chances of getting a job is still on you.

And yyhh0407 hasn't decided yet where to stay for future jobs. Can you find a job in HK by graduating from U of M? Maybe. Can you find a job in US by graduating from HKUST? No, unless you really stand out. And if yyhh0407 wants to go back to mainland (he mentioned in his original post), U of M is still better in my mind.  

But if the tuition really matters (I know U of M has a much higher tuition rate, but living expenses like rents won't differ much), go HKUST.

Michigan is definitly a target, but when one know that the previous MFE by the engineering was close since employment issue, one won't risk to be as white mouse to a new program (and in average math & stat department are not as good as engineering in industrial networking)

job searching:
can one find a job in US with Michigan? yes, but as said above, the prob is low (by historial record, not to mention the uncertainity as it is a new program)
can one find a job in US with HKUST? nothing is impossible, but can be assumed to be 0% first.

can one find a job in HK with Michigan? yes, Michigan is a well-known school for HK too, maybe even slightly better than HKUST indeed (but not likely to have significant difference in getting intervew)
can one find a job in HK with HKUST? yes, and indeed it is much more convivent to get interview, and visa.........(this is not important for those with a HK ID, but if not.......it counts)

conclusion: i do agree that michigan have a slightly better name than HKUST, but i don't think the difference is big enough to pay the difference in tuition. simply too low ROI.
of course, if OP is very confident, and had a couple of internships already, Michigan maybe the choice as the prob of staying in US with Michigan will be larger to justify the cost.

US 2nd tier MFE vs APAC top one is always a hard decision....
