答案是B。不理解E为什么不行。因为原文第一段最后写道：“Finally, he wanted to be more than a
realist. He wanted to transcend what he considered to be the banality of solely recording things exactly and to express as well his awareness of the occult and the strange.”

感觉transcend后面表达的就是realist的属性啊

题目问的是作者的观点，不是Thomas Hardy怎么想的。

E. 说的是“A propensity toward literary realism”（对现实主义的倾向）相比于“an interest in the occult and the strange.”（对神秘的超自然的兴趣）是"a less interesting novelistic impulse"（不那么有趣的小说创作推动）

而原文中说的是Thomas Hardy既“inclined to literary realism”（有现实主义文学的倾向），后面用一串句子分别陈述了他这种倾向在各个层面的表现，这几个句子都有分号隔开，而到句号为止。注意：从Finally开始，作者在讨论的已经不是Thomas Hardy对于现实主义的倾向了，而是Thomas Hardy想要“be more than a realist”。也就是说，后面那句话（也就是LZ列出的那句话）其实在讨论的是Thomas Hardy不同于现实主义的部分——这对应了本段开头第一句：“Thomas Hardy’s impulses as a writer, all of which he indulged in his novels, were numerous and divergent, and they did not always work together in harmony”

从头至尾，作者没有比较过"literary realism"和"interest in the occult and the strange"到底谁更有趣。
