I am an idiot when talking with Americans

I feel very, very frustrated because I just started my internship. It is very hard to fit in the new environment. When we ate out for a co-worker's farewell lunch, I was an idiot. I could not find a funny topic to talk with them. Especially, they don't show any interest in Chinese culture. I can only understand 30% of their talk, table topic is much more difficult than work topic.

Anyone has suggestions on that? I feel bad.
