Argument 39/174
Arg 174new Captain Seafood restaurant popular and profitable
39) A recent sales study indicates that consumption of seafood dishes in Bay City restaurants has increased by 30 percent during the past five years. Yet there are no currently operating city restaurants whose specialty is seafood. Moreover, the majority of families in Bay City are two-income families, and a nationwide study has shown that such families eat significantly fewer home-cooked meals than they did a decade ago but at the same time express more concern about healthful eating. Therefore, the new Captain Seafood restaurant that specializes in seafood should be quite popular and profitable.
Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.

Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be addressed in order to decide whether the conclusion and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to the questions would help to evaluate the conclusion.
G1: A recent sales study indicates that consumption of seafood dishes in Bay City restaurants has increased by 30 percent during the past five years.
G2: Yet there are no currently operating city restaurants whose specialty is seafood.
G3: Moreover, the majority of families in Bay City are two-income families, and a nationwide study has shown that such families eat significantly fewer home-cooked meals than they did a decade ago but at the same time express more concern about healthful eating.
C1: Therefore, the new Captain Seafood restaurant that specializes in seafood should be quite popular and profitable.
A1 (G1, C1): The increase in consumption of seafood dishes resulted from the increasing popularity of seafood.
A2 (G2, C1): Restaurants specialising in seafood would be more advantageous than regular restaurants in offering seafood dishes.
A3 (G3, C1): The survey results are relevant and interpreted correctly.
A4 (C1): Other factors are favourable for the profitability of the business.
According to the author, since there are no restaurants in Bay City specializing in seafood but people in the city seem to like seafood, a new restaurant with a focus on seafood should attract many guests and be profitable. We need to ask questions about the Bay City residents interest in seafood, the nationwide study and the two-income couples eating habits and views on healthful eating to decide if the conclusion is reasonable. More questions about the proposed seafood restaurant have to be addressed as well.
First of all, we need to ask questions about how and why more seafood dishes were consumed and whether the increase was caused by the Bay City peoples increasing appetite for seafood. It is possible that over the past five years the population of Bay City had grown or more tourists had come to the area. As a result, the consumption of all types of food had increased. Or perhaps, the increase of seafood consumption was driven by a decrease of prices in the seafood market. In cases like these, the increase in consumption does not mean that people become more interested in seafood and a new seafood restaurant may not be very popular.
Another important question to ask is whether the results from nationwide study can be used to predict the preference of Bay City residents. Specifically, we need to ask if the samples used in the nationwide study can represent the Bay City residents in terms of their ages, income level and family backgrounds. If the demographics of Bay City people are markedly different from the general population of the nation, the results of nationwide study would not be very useful for making decisions in Bay City.
Assuming that the study results are useful, we also need to ask where the two-income couples usually have their meals and gather more information on their views on healthful eating. Maybe the two-income couples are all very busy during the weekdays and usually have their lunches and dinners in fast food restaurants near the offices. If they do not have time for elaborate lunches and meals, the seafood restaurants will not be attractive to them. In the meantime, we need to know if they consider seafood as healthful food. Perhaps many of them believe that vegetarian diet is more healthful or prefer to have food rich in dietary fibres. If they do not consider seafood as particularly healthful, the proposed restaurant would not appeal to them.
Finally, it is important to ask if the proposed restaurant can generate profit even if it turns out to be popular. Many factors have to be taken into account when projecting the future profits of a business. For example, the cost of the raw materials, the rent of the premise and the salary of the staff can all affect the overall profitability of the business. Therefore, we need to ask more questions about these issues to decide if the restaurant is likely to make profits.
In conclusion, investing in a seafood restaurant requires significant amount of money and resources. Questions discussed above have to be investigated carefully in order to decide whether the proposed project is a good idea.
