While studying for your law degree, you will be asked to write essays, answer problem questions and submit other written coursework. The main purpose of this chapter is to help you understand the requirements for high marks through exploring the essential elements of English language usage needed to improve your writing style. Addressing points of law and developing logical argument in essays and problem questions will also be discussed in this chapter. The examples and explanations given in this chapter will help you gain con - dence in expressing your ideas clearly and logically. Once you have nished studying this chapter, you will need to continue writing as the more you practise writing, the better your writing style will get. Improving your academic writing style will in turn help you improve your grades.
The starting point is learning to understand the conventions of academic writing; the focus then will be on the grammar of various types of sentence as well as developing your skills in using punctuation marks. This chapter will also provide guidance and practice for linking ideas in order to develop your skills in paragraph writing.
Guidance for referencing and warning notes about plagiarising are given at the end of the chapter.
The vocabulary you use, the way you arrange words and the length of the sen- tences you write form your writing style. Style varies according to the purpose of writing, even for the same subject matter. For instance, you will nd that the style used for a law essay is different from that for legal documents and correspon- dence. It is therefore important to use the appropriate style.
