192      Success in any realm of life comes more often from taking chances or risks than from careful and cautious planning.

I speculate that a lot of accidental significant scientific discoveries lead the speaker to come to the conclusion that success in any area of life comes more often from taking chances or risks rather than from careful and cautious planning. If taking risks is defined as some cases like accidental scientific discoveries, the speaker may find some examples to support his idea. However, if taking chances or risks is only defined as always taking some measures whose results can never be forecasted by scientific analysis, I will not hesitate to assert that taking chances or risks cannot lead to any success, unless you are gambling.

First, the speaker misunderstands the meaning of taking chances or risks. He simply equates success (we temporarily call this success) coming from taking risks with some kinds of accidental scientific discoveries, which often lead to significant breakthroughs in science. Take launching a missile with man to the moon for example. The project of walking on the moon is so complicated that the whole project may involve thousands of experts in different fields ranging from politics to science. There must be a committee composed of some most outstanding individuals from the whole faculty. Faced with a mission that cannot tolerate even a little error, every specific step is discussed and planned by the faculty. By the time the aircraft is to be ready to be sent into the space, the scientists can even calculate the probability of the success. It's so rough that no chance or risk can ever be taken. We can hardly image what aftermath would come forth if these experts only rely on taking chances or risks. It is probable that the astronauts would lose their lives. Even the whole mission of manufacturing the rocket can not be completed until today and walking on the moon might be a daydream till now.

Here is another example in the field of medicine. In a hospital, a group of doctors are going to start an operation on a patient with heart disease. Several experts of cardiology, surgery, and internal medicine have sit together for several times to discuss the patient’s health condition, the method to be taken during the operation, the possibilities of all kinds of emergencies. Without cautious plans, the chances for the patient to get through the operation are slim. Not mention any hope to cure his cardinal disease. One may arguer that news programs have ever reported that a group of doctors from certain hospital took great risks to operate on a patient with cancer and that the operation was very successful. To my understanding, the phrase "took great risks" here means that many emergencies may appear during the operation. These emergencies are likely to deprive the patient of his/her life. In fact in this case of operation, the doctors usually pay more attention and make more detailed plans about the operation than they are engaged in a little operation. In short, it is the careful and cautious planning by doctors that leads to the success of the operation.

Even in the field of business, taking risks is not a wise strategy for success. Some may cite the example of Bill Gates. They may argue that Gates achieved great success after he took the biggest risk to drop out of Harvard to start his own business. However, these people only see the ostensible situation. They ignore the efforts Gates made to carefully plan his future after dropping out. He must be aware of what expenses he should pay for his dropping out. Taking risks without any careful planning sometimes may bring accidental success. However, these cases are accidental after all. One wins one time by luck cannot win all the time.

From the three examples in different fields of endeavor we can see clearly that although cases of accidental success are not scarce, these cases are still based on careful and cautious planning, except for gambling. We should not rely on taking risks to achieve any success. It is wiser for us to establish specific plans for our missions.

He simply equates success (we temporarily call this success) coming from taking risks with some kinds of accidental scientific discoveries, which often lead to significant breakthroughs in science.(题干没有只局限在科学领域,这样说不太好吧) Take launching a missile with man to the moon for example. Even the whole mission of manufacturing the rocket can(用虚拟语态,could) not be completed until today and walking on the moon might be a daydream till now.

One may arguer (argue) that news programs have ever reported that a group of doctors from certain hospital took great risks to operate on a patient with cancer and that the operation was very successful.

They ignore the efforts Gates made to carefully plan his future after dropping out. He must be aware of what expenses he should pay for his dropping out. Taking risks without any careful planning sometimes may bring accidental success. However, these cases are accidental after all. One wins one time (once)by luck cannot win all the time.

From the three examples in different fields of endeavor we can see clearly that although cases of accidental success are not scarce, these cases are still based on careful and cautious planning, except for gambling. (电视上的赌王啊什么的都是要通过精密计算的。:p)We should not rely on taking risks to achieve any success. It is wiser for us to establish specific plans for our missions.
