Is the absence of choice a circumstance that is very rare? From my part, I agree with the author, concerning so many opportunities around us today. A contrary view may reveal that sometimes or even often we are not free to make our choice and forced to do something determined. However, making choice with confine or force does mean lacking choice. When you determine to follow the social leading or not, you have made your choices.

Some one may argue that one was born without choice- if any, it’s their parents’, not their own.
We are forced to face the world, no matter in war or in peace; we are persuaded to call some place home, no matter it is a mansion or just a hut; we are compulsory to follow some rules as a number of the family, the society and the world. Meanwhile, we have been deprived of the choice of our complexion, our intelligence, our handsome or beautiful faces, and only thing waiting for us to do is just to accept the reality and learn to adept to environment. Without choice, we fall into the earth; likewise, we leave the world-except a few who choose suicide to end one’s life. But between the beginning and the end, we are busy to make our choice, to change our destiny and to compose the distinguished symphony of our life.

Keller, Helen, who suffers from the darkness and silence, still insisted in her choice- her capacity to rein her life, or in other words, the value of her existence. The God was so chary to give her three days brightness, but Helen chose to see the world by touching, by feeling or actually by heart. Who can say that the world in the Helen’s heart is not beautiful as our normal people? When the God closes one door to you, synchronously he opens another. Usually it is the pressure, the frustration or the loath that obscures our eyes and narrows our way to success. Surveying the problems calmly, you would find the alternative road left for those thoughtful people.

A prisoner may claim that they are deprived of choice as he has to give up almost all his freedom and stay in this cell. However, this is the result of his choice. When he committed crime, he had chosen the road to prison, just as when you are entitled to the right for choice, you are also responsible for your choice and action. A good choice may lead you to more spacious place, but a poor one may force you to give up more choice or freedom in future. So how to make choice usually is more important than choice itself. No accurate answer can tell us which choice is the best, and we only make our choices with our experience. No matter what will wait for us, success or failure, we have to continue our way in the road we have taken until next crossroad, then I have the right to make a new choice, for example, the prisoner could choose to perform well so that he could breathe the fresh air sooner. Made a good choice, and then you could enjoy more free choices, or you would imprison yourself into a narrow space.  

We are living in the society which limits our freedom as well as offering more opportunities to overwrite our fate. What we should and could do is not to complain about lacking choice to success, but to prepare and seek for it-once it occurs, we can face it with confidence, leisureliness and smile.

Life does not lack choice, but lack those who can make good use of it.

观点浅了点。而且你就一个观点吧，然后举了巨型的例子。显然是思路不开阔，只局限于几个小问题。

Free will, power or ability of human mind to choose a course of action or make a decision without being subjuct to restrains.  
Determinism, free will's opposite.  有兴趣自己扩展吧。我又懒了。
宿命论和自由论，我的观点其实和你在文中的意思差不多，完全的宿命论或者自由论都是不对的，人是在命的前提下，自由的。就像你那个例子，说坐牢的人，他们在面对艰难的时候，可以选择犯罪（结果有可能正好多钱，不过，不幸被抓）或者继续艰难的活着。你那些例子不要光摆在那里，稍加理论上的升华，就很好了
