According to the speaker, for scholars and researchers, pursuing their individual interests is more important, and we should not evaluate them by their contribution to the world. I admit that scholars' interests are very important. In the mean while, however, it is more important that whether scientists' work is propitious to the larger society when we evaluate them. Moreover, pursuing interests should also be limited to a certain extent.
Interest is the best teacher. It is also the most important motivity to scientists' research. Just the interest makes scientists willingly do their research work that are monotone and hard to general people这句句子没看懂,有这种用法吗?. Fabre, for example, had been so interested in insects when he was a child that he often climbed trees and bent over ground to observe insects. After devoting all himself to the insect research, he eventually wrote “Book of Insects” which is one of the greatest books on insectology. But pay attention to that we consider him as a great scientist because of the learned value of “Book of Insects” rather than his interest on insect.又是祈使句吗?不懂
Open the human history; almost all the greatest scientists have their great contributions to the evolution of the human society. Although their experiences of pursuing interests are often praised, in a large sense what indeed endue them with high historic status is their excellent accomplishments. For instance, Alexander Fleming, who is a Scottish doctor, was interested in finding a kind of medicine to cure bacteria infection that devitalized many soldiers during the World War one用World War I或First World War感觉比较合适. In 1928 while he was studying staphylococcus, he accidentally discovered penicillin which is the first antibiotic, making it possible for people to survive common bacteria infections; soldiers could survive their wounds instead of dying. Many other scientists were studying similar medicine under the drive of curiosity in the mean time. Regrettably, most of them failed, and silenced in the history. Thus, it is Fleming’s accomplishments make him a famous scientist.
If taking the importance of interest too far, scientists maybe waste their time and great talent. Take Newton who is one of the greatest scientists for instance, he had some great contribution when he was young, but was interested in religion when he was old. Undoubtedly he was pursuing his interest, devoting himself to the religion research, however, having no important accomplishments any more. Further more, pursuing individual interests excessively maybe bring disaster. Many bioscientists are researching some dangerous virus which even could extinct human themselves. In such case, the freedom we should grant researchers is not boundless; and severe restrictions posed by pertinent laws and regulations are needed.
To sum up, interest could impel researchers to strive to their work, but achievements decide their historic roles ultimately. Either great scientists or general researchers in college, when pursuing interests and exploring nature enjoyably, should make for society evolution as well as limit themselves reasonably. After all, it is fair that history present enjoyment to scholars who pursue individual interests and glory to scientists who make contributions to the large society.

If I'm who I am because I'm who I am and you're who you are because you are who you are, then I'm who I am and you're who you are.
If,on the other hand, I'm who I am because you're who you are, and if you are who you are because I'm who I am, then I'm not who I am and you're not who you are.
