It is always an individual who is the impetus for innovation; the details may be worked out by a team, but true innovation results from the enterprise and unique perception of an individual.

In the history of science, many significant discoveries are attributed to single individual. It is true that those individuals might play the most important role in innovation; nevertheless, it is wrong to ignore the effort from a team. Not only do the details of innovation need teamwork, in fact, without the cooperation of others in a team, no innovation could have taken place.
What does the word "team" mean here? It should not be limited in members of the laboratory or those names listed under the title of a publication. The "team" should include all the persons who contribute to the innovation, a professor who gives some constructive ideas, a colleague who point out several fallacies, even an opponent who provides experience of failure.
No one is expert in all the disciplines. Facing infinite knowledge of the universe, any one, even the most famous scientist in the world has no choice but to admit to be ignorant. Innovation, which means breaking out from old traditions, is an arduous task needing the knowledge from many different disciplines. Diversified views from team members based on their respective specialty can compliment the deficiency of each others. For example, due to the complicated technique of CPU designing, any tiny advance in the computer science requires abundant knowledge both on hardware and software. Only by the ideas from programmers, or solely by the effort of circuit engineers, no great innovation can be achieved. Nowadays, IBM, Legend, and other world’s famous computer manufacturers, employ a great number of specialists with different background every year, to exploit new computer techniques. In other words, in a team, members who specialize in different areas can bring forward a more comprehensive idea for innovation. Consider BCS theory (an advanced theory on super conduction) for example; three people won Nobel Prize for it, Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer. Bardeen was an experienced physicist, a former Nobel Prize winner; Cooper was good at theoretical models, and presented the famous “Cooper pair” concept; Schrieffer was a young scientist then, with great passion and vigor. The success of the theory should not be ascribed to any individual of them but the team as a whole.
On the other hand, people mistakenly considered some historic innovation as the contribution of one individual. If asked to cite some elites in the history who brought innovation on their own, one might give the example of L.V. de Broglie, who presented wave-particle dualism, a method to explain the principles of micro-world. Without questions, Broglie’s unique perception is the key factor of the innovation; however, it is rash to attribute the success to him alone. Before the new concept was established, the debate between wave theory and particle theory lasted for several years, during which many elaborate experiments have been conducted. Broglie’s innovation was based on the effort of many theoretical and experimental scientists, who might contribute more to the theory. When it comes to political field, innovation also could not survive without a team. For instance, “one country, two systems” theory, presented by Deng Xiaoping, successfully solved the disputed issue on Hong Kong in 1997 and Macao in 1999. Although Deng Xiaoping played a crucial role in this plan, he attributed the success to the wisdom of the mass.
To sum up, teamwork is indispensable to innovation. Therefore, in education, while the stories of some outstanding innovative figures are adored by students, it is necessary to emphasize the importance of teamwork, since no great advance could take place without cooperation. |
