Issue201 the purpose of education should be to provide student with a value system, a standard, and a set of ideas—not to prepare them for a specific job.

提纲:1 教育的目的之一是培养合格的劳动者
2 另一个目的是培养合格的公民
3 两者缺一不可

The prime minister of Great Britain—Tony Blair declared: ”In today’s world there is no more valuable asset than knowledge. The more you learn, the more you earn. Education is a economic imperative.” As he says, education is a social investment that, in the most efficient manner, prepares human forces to contribute to economic growth. Also, as shown in Japan, Singapore, the United States, education undertakes a mission to cultivate responsible, moral, and honest citizens.

Education and economy are envisioned as having interdependent relationship. Competence in the economy depend on the quality of education, whereas the goals of education depend on the economy. Under these circumstances education should cultivate students to meet the requirement of economy which means education should cultivate students who master some technologies of specific job to contribute to economic growth. If not, education will be too utopian to thrive and accomplish its other goals. Because if education cannot supply well-trained workers to economy, it will lose its financial support from economy, the education will become water without source or a tree without a root. And another goal of education is to give the students competence to survive in the society. Hence, schools should make courses relevant to specific job with which the graduates could lead a life in the competitive society.

As the saying goes ”a man is not a man without education”, education also has responsibility to nurture qualified citizens as well as whole human being. If education emphasis too much on job training but ignores the mission that, it should undertake, give instructions of correct values and morality, it may lead to disastrous damage on human society. Someone who master advanced technologies but lack of correct values will threaten the social security, and which is unfortunately demonstrated by emergence of hackers, also called crackers, who break into computer system in order to steal or damage information. In addition, we could not neglect another purpose of education is to promote creativity and critical thinking which distinguish human from machine. Without either of those characteristics the human civilization cannot flourish and the humanity cannot evolve.

“Acquisition and fostering human resources are considered to be more important than any other aspects of society,” thought the education council of Japan. So education plays an irreplaceable role in growth of economy and development of human culture and civilization. Therefore, it is important and necessary, for both economic and moral reasons, to combine job training and curriculum relevant to values, morality and responsibility.

R=replace, A=add, D=delete, C=comments
The prime minister of Great Britain(R: United Kingdom)—Tony Blair declared:”In today’s world there is no more valuable asset than knowledge. The more you learn, the more you earn. Education is a(R: an) economic imperative.” As he says, education is a social investment that, in the most efficient manner, prepares human forces to contribute to economic growth. Also, as shown in Japan, Singapore, (A: and) the United States, education undertakes a mission to cultivate responsible, moral, and honest citizens.

Education and economy are envisioned as having interdependent relationship. Competence in the economy depend (R: depends) on the quality of education, whereas the goals of education depend on(R: are set for) the economy. Under these circumstances education should (R: should education) cultivate students to meet the requirement(R: requirements) of economy which means(C: what do you mean here?) education should cultivate students who (A: have already, C: this is based on my understanding) master (R: mastered) some technologies of specific job to contribute to economic growth. If not(C: this expression is too obscure for readers to follow), education will be too utopian to thrive(C: education thrive? I don’t think you want to talk about the thriving of education but that of economy, do you?) and accomplish its other goals(C: what are these goals? Can you illuminate?). Because(D) if education cannot supply well-trained workers to economy, it will lose its financial support(C: think about it, there must be some better phrase for it) from economy, the education will become water without source or a tree without a root. (D) And another goal of education is to give the students competence to survive in the society. Hence, schools should make courses relevant to specific job with which the graduates could lead a life in the competitive society.(C: up to now, I still don’t know whether you agree or disagree the original idea.)

As the saying goes ”a man is not a man without education”, education also has responsibility to nurture qualified citizens as well as whole human being. If education emphasis too much on job training but ignores the mission(D) that, it should undertake,(D) give instructions of correct values and morality, it may(would) lead to disastrous damage on(R: to) human society. Someone who master(R: masters) advanced technologies but lack of(R: lacks) correct values(R: morality) will threaten the social security(R: would be a threat to the society), and(D) which is unfortunately demonstrated by (A: the) emergence of hackers, also called crackers(D), who break into computer system in order to steal or damage information(D). In addition, we could not neglect another purpose of education, (A: which) is to promote creativity and critical thinking which distinguish human from machine(R: animals). Without either of those characteristics (A: can not) the human civilization cannot(D) flourish and the humanity cannot(D) evolve.

“Acquisition and fostering human resources are considered to be more important than any other aspects of society,” thought the education council of Japan. So education plays an irreplaceable role in (A: the) growth of economy and development of human culture and(D) civilization. Therefore, it is important and necessary, for both economic and moral reasons, to combine job training and curriculum relevant to values, morality and responsibility.(C: Good, finally I see your opinion)
