issue119 : When research priorities are being set for science, education, or any
other area, the most important question to consider is: How many people'
s lives will be improved if the results are successful.
What is the most important question to consider when determining the research priorities in science, education or other areas? Different with what the issue claims, I think it is varied with different areas, depending on particular circumstances.
Admittedly, in certain area, especially in terms of politics research, the most important question to consider is what the issue suggests. As we know, politics is a subject that concentrates on the nation and human life. Its main purpose is to enrich the country and better the life of its people. As a country is made up of people, if all the people are leading relatively better life, then the country must be very strong. Therefore, in the area of politics, the most important question to consider is :how many people's lives will be improved if the result are successful.
However, in other areas such as science and education, which have no direct connection with human life, the most important question to consider will obviously be replaced with more urgency ones, as we shall discuss in the following.
In science, the most important question to consider when setting the research priorities is: is this research feasible? As we know, the duty of a scientist is to explore and discover the unknown. Although one may have thousands of new ideas, he has to follow certain general principles-the nature laws. Any idea that lies beyond the scope of these proved laws is no more than a fiction and could not come true. For many decades, people are seeking an ever-working machine, a machine that can work without energy consuming. it is evident that if this kind of machine is put into practical, all the human kind will benefit from it .though a variety of designs are proposed, they are never fabricated and put into use. in fact, they are in contract with the law of conservation of energy .anyone who put their heart into this kind of research will doubtlessly fail at last and the work he has done is totally useless and is a waste of time. This kind of research is infeasible and should be avoided before we decide the research priorities.
In education, the most important question to consider when setting the research priorities is: is this research helpful to cultivate student. The main function of education is to teach. Then how to evaluate the effect of it? How can we call an education system a successful one? The one which is beneficial for a student's growing. Therefore, education research should pay more attention on how to teach a student more effectively, on how to provide a relatively better circumstance; on how to make the lessons more interesting for a child, on how to provide equal opportunity for educators with different backgrounds and different religion. If these most important items are overshadowed by the consideration of the improvement of the people's lives, we cannot achieve teaching efficiency and may do harm to the people's lives in the long run.
In sum, the most important question to consider when setting the research priorities is not a fixed one. It has to change with different areas and concrete matters. No principle is eternal truth and no law is valid everywhere. |
