Value is usually regarded as the price of something or as relative worth, utility, and importance( such as “value” in “a good value at the price” ). But when it comes to lasting value, it is quite obvious that it means the latter kind of value , and the price of something always fluctuate. It is the artist who creates art which is indispensable in our lives and can be viewed as something of lasting value. And it is the critic who often helps us understand art, chooses those first-rate artworks and gives the artist in time feedback which is quite important and can also be viewed as something ( though untouchable) of lasting value.
Then it is sure that the artist gives society of something lasting value. As we all can feel- art which presents color, music, dance and etc, is the weekend party, the music from car radio, the toys babies played with…Art serves as fantasy, communication, and gives us great enjoyment, tranquility, characteristics and future. We cannot imagine the world without art. The beauty of art and the resonance when we appreciate artworks usually can not be measured by money. For example, some historic architectures such as Forbidden City and Great Wall, are the emblem of our nation and should not be evaluated by its price and they are priceless. Further more, the enjoyment when we dabble in art is something cannot be sold.
When it comes to the critic, though the ideas of the critic help us understand the art works, they often mislead us. Art is something spiritual, emotional, and different people have different understandings, but the critic is more able to make their ideas public which prevent us from discovering our own thoughts and indirectly undermine our appreciation when their comment is the mainstream. Take "starry night" (drawn by Van Gogh and was sold at an extremely high price recently) for example. When the work was first published, it was questioned and was not accepted by critics. The ideas of the critics at his time then inhibited this kind of art from being popular. And the critic at Van Gogh’ time fail to recognize the lasting value of his work.
Furthermore, the creation and inspiration is more likely the inane qualification of the artist and the critic’ feedback usually destroy them. Van Gogh at first made progress by learning from other painters and was influenced by the critic. But his works were just imitating at that time. It was when he neglected the comment of the critic, did not want any attention of the critic and only care about the painting that he made great progress . And the progress in fact was the result of his creation which seemed to be endued by God.
Well, from the reasons stated above, we can get into a conclusion that it is artist who give our society something of lasting value, and the critic do give society values, but they usually mislead us and have a negative effect on the artist.
