43"To be an effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards."
The speaker's assertion that a public official must have the highest ethical and moral spirit to be real effective is wrongheaded. Misunderstanding the responsibility of public officials, the speaker fails to recognize that the merit of being an effective leader which should not only include high standard of morals and ethics but also compose of many other criterions. The speaker seems to overrate the importance of moral and ethical standard, and unfairly allege that an effective leader "must" maintain the highest moral and ethical standards.
The first reason I disagree with the speaker is that, in the field of business, the value of an effective leader lies in his/her ability to make company competitive and gain profits not only for leaders themselves but also for all its faculty members and for the welfare of the whole society. A case in point is Yang Yuanqing, the CEO of the "Lenovo" cooperation, who help the company win thousands million dollars and makes "Lenovo" take up nearly half of the PC market. Recently, the combination of “IBM” and “Lenovo” aptly illustrate his competence, intelligence to be an effective business leader again. However, the fact that it is unnecessary for an effective leader to maintain the highest ethical and moral standards, does not mean business leaders cannot concern about their moral code. During the disaster of tsunami, many world famous company donated money to Red Cross in order to help those people who suffered in this catastrophe. Therefore, for an effective, a basic standard of moral and ethics are needed but not necessarily the highest is demanded.
Similarly, what we call an effective political leader do not necessarily include highest ethical and moral standards. What we expect from an effective leader is that he/she should know the deepest yearning of people, lead people to where they want to go and help people achieve their desires. For example, American people wanted to climb out of the Great Depression and needed someone to ensure that they could do it, Roosevelt did, and thus win himself a second election for next Presidents and became the first President who got reappointment three times in American history; the British people still believed they could win the war after the defeat of 1940, Churchill told them they were right and thus be considered as the hero of World War Second and be named as one of the best Presidents in Britain. Accordingly, it is not because their highest ethical or moral standards but their ability to achieve people's desire that make them becomes effective leaders.
Admittedly, there are still some areas that demand the leader maintain the highest standards of ethics and morals. An extreme example is in the social-spiritual field, it is crucial and almost indispensable for leaders to have highest moral standards. Without Gandhi's highest spirit of social responsibility, and without Martin Luther King's moral and ethical charisma, probably no one will believe in what they said. As a matter of fact, spiritual leaders in the social or religious fields, who are supported by the general people, can only be effective through maintaining the highest ethical and moral standards than any others to win the credit and belief of their supporters.
In conclusion, while I concede the speaker’s assertion has some merit by underscoring the importance of moral and ethical standards in some cases, however, it is unfair and arbitrary for the speaker to claim that this standard of morality and ethics is the only criterion in determining a leader’s efficiency. Only by having a deep understanding of different fields, could we realize what are essential for an effective leader. |
