167"It is impossible for an effective political leader to tell the truth all the time. Complete honesty is not a useful virtue for a politician.

As honesty is virtue character of a person, it is equal important to a political leader who responsible for his people. Therefore an effective political leader is obligatory to share the information with the public as much as possible.

   First of all, to be supported for long time, the political leader should keep honesty. As it is valuable principle, honesty is one criterion which people select for their leader. Although by using political rhetoric and tactics, politicians acquire attentions, money, reputations, and powers, those are not the key factors. If any political leader seems to totally ignore the morality, he or she will absolutely lose the effectiveness and be deserted by the people. Take the US ex-president Richard M. Nixon for example; during the investigation of the Watergate Scandal, he deliberately lied in front of the whole world. This severe duplicity ended at his resigned the presidency.  

   Moreover, from the vision of the citizen, keeping honest should be the indispensable.The function of political leader is to guide the nation to prosperity and improve people's lives. When sometimes the citizens' personal benefits are harmed, it is the undeniable responsibility for political leaders to tell them the truth. Take last year's world-wide known Sars for example, Chinese government firstly changed its methods to establish and update the numbers and regions of Sars infection throughout the country. The honesty that Chinese government hold towards the Chinese people and the world reflected the efficiency, protect more people not being infected, and finally led Chinese people fighting against Sars successfully. Reports say that more and more Chinese people to be more satisfied with the government and leaders for its efficiency and honesty. Therefore, the new elected chairman of Chinese government was praised and supported by most of the Chinese citizens. In America, the situation would be the same. If taxpayers found that their political leaders were cheating them, they would definitely not re-elect them next time.

   Admittedly, in certain conditions, the political leaders should conceal something from public on the behalf of the whole nation.  Such as, the country's defense system, the action of the military force, the total amount of money deposited in the bank .If these are made known by ordinary people, the whole country will be in danger. Hence, it is impossible and irresponsible for a political leader to disclose all the information always and the public should understand this point.

    To sum up, for a political leader, it is of more importance to be effective than to be a moral personification, thus although honesty is a traditional virtue, if it be useless or even harmful in some special situations, a politician should dear to lie or close the mouth. Thus the most appropriate attitude towards honesty that politicians should take is that being shrewd enough when it is necessary, and then honest in the remaining time.
