36 "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
In my opinion, when consider the greatness of history figures; we should base on a relm-by-relm analysing. So I don't agree with the speaker's assertion that greatness of individuals can only decided by their offspring, in reality, for the realm of political or art, the greatness of individuals can be known by their contemporaries.
When learn through the history of human beings, we can find that in the field of politics, the greatness of political leader are always decided by their contemporaries not following people. The responsibility of political leaders is leading their people to a democratic, freely, and modern society. So people who live in the same times can appreciate their leaders since the progress and prosperity of a society can be easily discovered. A good example is Roosevelt who was famous for his new deal, which helped the nation overcome the great depression. People in that time can truly find their lives changes and understand that it was due to their great president's lead. In fact, his success was known by the citizens in that time and people of the nation also granted their hero high value. His leadership was decided sufficient and right by his contemporaries, what 's more he was the only president in the United Nations who had been re-elected four times. Hence, for the most situations in political field, outstanding leadership is decided by their contemporaries.
As far as I am concerned, another realm, in which the greatness of individuals are also be decided by contemporaries is arts. Actually, as soon as artist’s works appears, we can find the comments of them. People who live in the same era can estimate an artist's greatness by observing whether his/her artwork is popular and of high merits. For instance, the famous musician Mozart had got world's welcome and respects for his talent in music and excellent symphonies even when he was very young. Similarly, Mark Twain, his novel was so popular in his times and he was also got high reputation of his contemporaries. His writing styles had influence more than one generation of American writer. From what I have stated above, we can see that for the realm of arts, people's greatness also be judged by their contemporaries.
Admittedly, in other domains, such as the realm of science, the greatness of individuals sometimes can only be recognized by people who live after them, a good example for my assertion is Copernicus who insisted the geocentric theory. Even until Copernicus lost his live, he was thought as madman by his contemporaries and most people couldn’t understand his contribution to the scientific history. In this realm since the lack of background knowledge, not each person can understand great scientists' thinking, which always go beyond common people's ability. Due to the limitation, some scientists' greatness can only be decided by people who live after them when both scientific research and people's knowledge have reached to a certain level.
In sum, the speaker was too superficial to draw the conclusion that in all realms, the greatness of individuals are known by their offspring, when it refers to scientific realm, we can say that, while for the realm of political and arts things are different. |
