28"Students should memorize facts only after they have studied the ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts. Students who have learned only facts have learned very little."

In our daily life, this circumstance is not rare to see--in order to achieve higher grade in a exam, we try our best to memorize a large amount of facts related, and don't care the ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts at all. After such an exam, we are very likely to feel relieved for the exam has been handled, and then afraid, because we realize that we have learn very little from these facts, most of which have simply been forgotten already! That's why I strongly support part of the speaker's claim that serious studying the ideas, trends, and concepts that facilitates to explain the facts is far more important than mere learning the facts.

Admittedly, we are not able to systematically study or there is little necessity to study the context behind some facts. For example, when we are doing researches or writing papers in our own field, there is high likelihood that we may need to refer to some facts or theories in another discipline. In this case, it is just unnecessary for us to spend time and energy in thorough comprehension of the ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts or theories. Besides, conducting this extra study is possibly beyond our ability.

Otherwise, studying more than facts is entirely necessary to individuals, and the development of our society for the following reasons.

As a matter of fact, the purpose of education is equipping students with the ways of exploring and learning facts, other than mere facts written in textbooks. If education were only about teaching the rote facts, students would only be educated into machines storing huge amount of facts that they can never utilize.

However, teaching and encouraging students to learn the ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain the facts facilitates to achieve the purpose of education. In this information era, the tremendous amount of information--or facts, is just too large for our human brains to remember, and consequently make it too hard for us to select the useful ones effectively and apply them into practical use. But the information that help explain these facts enables us to see the correlations among the accessible information and in what aspects can we thoroughly explain them while doing researches, and thus enhances our comprehension, as well as our methods in exploring and learning more facts. Students educated in this way will ultimately benefit from the ability of lifelong learning and exploring.

Moreover, it is through this all-rounded study of facts that human knowledge advances. Without Newton's earnest studies in the laws of motion and universal gravitation, which cover the definitions of these two objects and their further influence in the universe, he would not have made the greatest contribution to physics, and the huge impact on theoretical astronomy. People at his time, or even several centuries later, would have only known that apples would fall to ground when they were ripe. Besides the development in natural science, in the aspect of cultural studies, it is through the careful studies of the ideas, trends and concepts that help explain cultural phenomena that archaeologists manage to reveal the cultural heritage our ancestors passed down to us.

As a matter of fact, students accustomed to memorizing facts, other than making efforts to truly understand them as well as the ideas, trends, and concepts behind them can hardly stand the responsibility of the development of our society.

In sum, it is only through serious study of the ideas, trends, and concepts that facilitate the explanation of the facts that we are able to achieve a complete comprehension of the facts, and consequently able to apply them into practical use, as well as to conduct further exploration and studies, and ultimately contribute the development of our society.

In this case, it is just unnecessary for us to spend time and energy in thorough comprehension of the ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts or theories.

very professional! excpet some usage is still kind of Chinese (not native enough)
for example, "this circumstance is not rare to see" (but there's gramatically nothing wrong about this sentence)

i think you write very well ( i feel embarassed)

seems "ideas, trends, concepts..." not good to put together

i think "beyond our ability" is fine. "out of" may be not right.

i think you need to improve on 'linkage words'. not everything can put together.

ok let me try to do the whole thing. i m not sure if i can do it. just let me try

28 "Students should memorize facts only after they have studied the ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts. Students who have learned only facts have learned very little."

In our daily life, it is not difficult to see such scenario--in order to achieve higher grade in an exam, students try their best to memorize a large amount of facts related, and ignore the underlying explanations of the ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts. After an exam studied from mere memorization, the students at first instinct may feel relieved after the submission of their papers, yet may very likely be confused about the fact that very little materials may be actually assimilated after memorizing these facts. Since most of the materials are likely to be forgotten after memorization without understanding, it is to the students’ advantage to make sense of what they learned by comprehending the underlying meanings behind the facts.

Admittedly, it is difficult and unrealistic to systematically study some hard facts such as the chronology of a civil war. References and cross-discipline citations are highly valued in writing research papers. ....

Moreover, the comprehension beyond memorizing hard facts is absolutely necessary to each individual, and ultimately critical to the development of our society.

As a matter of fact, the purpose of education is to equip students with the methods and algorithms of exploring and learning facts, other than mere facts written in textbooks. If education were only about teaching the rote facts, the students would only be educated into machines that store huge amount of facts without the ability to apply into real-world situations.
.....

(i think the effort you make to be argumentative is very good. pardon me that i may debilitate parts of that very valuable efforts of yours

i never practice any gre essays and i don't know the "xin dong fang". Thanks a lot if there's anything you think i need to improve on my writings.!!
