40."Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

学者和研究人员不应该关注他们的工做是否对社会有所贡献; 他们追求自己个人的兴趣更为重要,无论那些兴趣看起来是多么不寻常或者多么特殊。

Nowadays scientific research attracts more and more social attention and even become a popular and controversial topic. Someone such as the speaker advocate scholars and researchers to pursue any of their individual interests rather than work for establishing contributions to society. While others prefer social contribution of academic study to personal interests. In my point of view, although we should not intervene academic research to a large extent, it is not wise to neglect the social responsibility in scientific fields.

To begin with, in scientific fields, scholars and researchers have the rights to choose the direction of their study in terms of their interests. In order to enable the objectiveness and independence of scientific research, neither government nor individuals should intervene academic study. Scholars' rights to think and study independently show the spirit of freedom and democracy. Meanwhile, just as the saying goes: "interest is the best teacher." Interest is the most efficient power and inspiration of scientific research. Many scientists achieved great success depending on personal interest of the outside world. Watt once wondered why the kettle lid raising up when the water was boiled. The special phenomenon attracted his interest to exploring the secret of it, and eventually lead to the invention of steam engine. Brother Wrights were interested in flying by themselves and finally invented plane. They are the best examples which interests lead scientist to academic success.

However, we should not advocate negative interests in scientific research which may be harmful to our society. Giving scientific researchers complete freedom in academic research equals to abandon, which may lead to negative influence to our human beings. Academic research should not disobey essential social norms. If the individual academic interests of scientific researchers offence moral standards and laws, it surely should be prescribed. The most persuasive examples of such situations is the research of cloning. As a controversial issue both in moral and legal, it is forbidden to clone human beings in our society, no matter how the scientists are interested in such research. As social members, scientists have the obligation to follow social standards and laws first.

Moreover, it is also the necessity and responsibility of scientists to promote the development by their academic achievements. The work of scientific research is a social enterprise rather than  individual interests after all. Study for personal interests while not concerning social need shows the lack of social responsibility. Such behavior will probably result in a waste of social resource but achieving nothing. Meanwhile, the sense of mission of making efforts for society can also be a great motive power to endeavor and pursue in the way of study. Madame Curie is the best example of scientists who pursuing in scientific field for the sake of the whole society. Scientists are respected by their contributions to the society as well as the spirit of pursuing.

To sum up, we should not neglect necessary social responsibilities of scientific researchers in their study. The speaker's statement seems a little extreme. Giving scientific researchers too much freedom on study may lead to negative influence and social problems. It is important for researchers to study for social needs as well as individual interests.

Giving scientific researchers complete freedom in academic research equals to abandon, abandon似乎是及物动词,所以用的不太合适吧

The speaker's statement seems a little extreme.该成The speaker's statement seems to be a little extreme.
