242The following appeared as an editorial in the student newspaper of Groveton College.

"To combat the recently reported dramatic rise in cheating among college and university students, these institutions should adopt honor codes similar to Groveton's, which calls for students to agree not to cheat in their academic endeavors and to notify a faculty member if they suspect that others have cheated. Groveton's honor code replaced an old-fashioned system in which students were closely monitored by teachers and an average of thirty cases of cheating per year were reported. The honor code has proven far more successful: in the first year it was in place, students reported twenty-one cases of cheating; five years later, this figure had dropped to fourteen. Moreover, in a recent survey conducted by the Groveton honor council, a majority of students said that they would be less likely to cheat with an honor code in place than without."



In this argument, the arguer recommends that college and university should adopt honor similar to Groveton’s to combat with the recently reported dramatic rise in cheating among their students. At first glance, this argument seems very specific and convincing. A careful examination of it, however, would reveal how groundless it is.

Most of all, the mere fact provide in the argument is insufficient to conclude that the honor code is successful in Groveton.

Firstly, the arguer simply draws his conclusion by comparing two years without providing the status of years between them. It is quite possible that the reported cheating cases have no changes at all, even increase dramatically in the years between the two years the argument cited. The five years decrease is merely an accident.  

Secondly, grant that the reported cases of cheating decrease gradually, the real cases may be not changed, even increase. There might be too many cheatings, students are custom for them or not self-aware enough, nobody notify the faculty members, at the same time teachers reported cheating cases based on notifications. It is uncanny to see the decreased reported cheating cases.  

Finally, the recent survey is conducted by Groveton honor council itself, which make what it provides open to doubt. The students might be influenced by the surveyor and fail to represent their real opinions. Moreover, agreeing not to cheat does not mean that they actually have abandoned cheating. Since no one likes to being considered as cheaters, most of them make the agreement, or they will certainly be exposed that they have the motive in cheating.

Besides, even if the honor code is successful in Groveton, it is no reason to apply it to all of the colleges and universities. Maybe the students in Groveton are more honest than the other students, they are more suitable for the self-conscious method. Meanwhile, the others are not as self-conscious as them, without the supervision of the teachers, they are more inclined to cheating and nobody will notify the cases to the faculty members.  

To sum up, the arguer is not well reasoning and lack credibility because the evidence cited in the analysis does not lead strong support to what the arguer maintains. To make the argument more convincing, the arguer would have to provide more evident to prove that the real cheating cases number decrease after the adoption of honor code and this code is suitable for all the schools.
