Has technology in the past century make people's lives more comfortable? The speaker claims so. Although I concede that the effects of technologies are not always positive, I strongly agree with the speaker that technology advances, particularly information technology and automation, have produce tremendous improvements in human life.

In the first place, the information technology has made interpersonal communication much easier than ever before. In the ancient time, people from different places could contact with one another only by face-to-face meeting or by writing letters, which cost a rather long period of time and great efforts. When it comes to some emergencies, such as war, people in Greek used a beacon set upon a height to spread messages. This method was usually affected by weather thus not a effective way to communicate with people far away. With the help of telecommunication, especially electronic mails and the Internet, however, people all over the world now can send and receive personal messages between countries and access to information instantly simply by clicking the mouse. In short, the adavatage given by technology make people's lives more effective and comfortable.

In the second place, automation has greatly improved the working conditions of workers in many industries. In automobile industry, for example, workers often find it repetitive and monotonous to perform tasks on an assembly line. In this case, automatic robots are designed to take the place of human to manufacture cars even more effectively. As a result, automation technology not only releases people from labourous and even dangerous job and increases the free time of workers, but also lowers the cost of the production, making automobiles and other products available to more people. Therefore, the living quality of people is enhanced by the technology.

Admittedly, some technologies, such as nuclear and chemical technologies, might undermine the quality of our life and even threaten our existence. The disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Soviet Union in 1986 is a good example to illustrate this point. This worst nuclear accident in human history contaminated large areas  of Soviet Union and resulted in resettlement of roughly 20,000 people. What we should learn from this lesson is that technology is a double-edged sword and that only with great carefulness can we get the sword under our control.

In sum, while technology has both positive and negative influnces on our lives, we are able to make good use of it by taking certain mesures which prevent the negative effects.
