“The most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. Any leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little”
---------------------正文---------------------------------
The speaker claims that any leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little. I strongly agree with the speaker. Every little pace of progress made by the society is achieved after conquering a lot of difficulties. The popular opinion is often a reflection of the difficulties. If the leader’s will is easily influenced by the shifts in the popular opinion, which means the leader will quit whenever he/she meets difficulties, the society will make no progress at all. On the contrary, is it always right for a leader to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives? It depends on.
As a guy once said, “a man should be brave enough to get the targets what he can achieve, tolerant enough to give up the targets what he can not achieve, wise enough to distinguish these two categories of targets.” This principle is created to guide people’s deed. However, it is also adaptive for a family or even a society. The leaders of a society who have the responsibility of making decisions for the people who live in the society must know clearly whether their targets are achievable or not. Thus, if the original target is achievable or necessary, the leader should consist on it steadily enough until it is realized, but if the original target is validated to be impossible by facts, the leader should follow the popular opinion and refine the target.
Take Chinese history as an example. When the country was suffering aggression, the great Chinese leader, Mao Zedong, stood out and led the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) who finally drove off the aggressors and established the People’s Republic of China. During the years of war, Mao Zedong conquered countless difficulties, and never made a single step backwards. How dangerous it would be if his mind was influenced by the popular opinions and consequently gave up the struggling with the aggressors! The whole China will fall to be colony of other countries and the whole nation will be slaves of the aggressors. Therefore, it is very wise for the leader Mao to consist his principle all those years and all of the Chinese should thank him for bringing a better society for them.
Sometimes a leader’s objective might be impossible, although with good intends. In this case, the leader should refine his objective immediately under the help of popular opinion. Let me show you this point with another example of Mao’s. In the year of 1957, China came into an era of the Great Leap Forward under the direction of Mao’s principle. At the beginning, there are some opposite voices, but Mao consisted on his principle and neglected those voices. People began to cheat the government and China was in illusory prosperity. After years, the plan turned out to be infeasible and Mao had to change his mind. If he still consisted on his opinion despite of the popular opinion, the wrong plan would do more harm to the distressful nation. Chinese would keep on suffer from poverty and hunger.
In conclusion, to be an effective leader, the most important thing is to make proper objectives which must be achievable for the whole group and consist on his/her principle and objectives steadily despite how many difficulties they will encounter and how strong the opposite popular opinion will be. But once the objective turned to be infeasible, the leader should follow the popular opinion and refine his/her principle to reduce the group’s loss to the lowest. |
