"Students should be encouraged to realize that mental agility and rhetorical skill must be accompanied by sincerity and the true conviction
of their own beliefs."
It is no wonder that mental agility and rhetorical skills are essential virtues for a person, but it is likely that they play a role just as two vital weapons to hurt something severely if there is no sincerity and the true conviction of one's own beliefs. And therefore, I strongly agree with the speaker's assertion that students should be encouraged to realize that mental agility and rhetorical skill must be accompanied by sincerity and the true conviction of their own beliefs.
Admittedly, mental agility and rhetorical skill are both important and useful qualities of a social animal-person. Students, referred to people receiving formal education, who would step into the society early or late, should be encouraged to be an individual with skills, values, and behaviors that will help them become responsible citizens, contribute to social stability in the country, and accordingly promote the advance of society. Mental agility could lead to the sooner mastery for some useful skills for the further profession of a student. Likewise, the mental agility could bring on the intensive and extensive understanding of and insight to the moral and ethical standards in the shorter time. For the rhetorical skill, it has something great to do with the communication and interaction with others. A good rhetorical skill would lead to fine communication and interaction with others, consequently which can undoubtedly promote the harmony of society.
However, what would happen, you may wonder, if these two virtues are isolated from sincerity and the true conviction of their own beliefs? We can not only see it from some concrete examples, but also deduce it from general principles. Let us consider the virtue of mental agility firstly based on there is no sincerity and the true conviction of beliefs. One of my close friends, he is known well for his sharp smartness and strong mental agility. He easily defeated many competitors and got the admission for undergraduate education to the Number One University-Peking University in China, but he got little in academic achievements and even could not get a job after graduating. Why, you may ask? I, as his close friend, know the actual reason. He has always been staggering in the conviction of his beliefs, he has no firm beliefs and not to mention true conviction. Likewise, when it comes to the rhetorical skill, which is isolated from sincerity and true conviction of their own beliefs, it is more dangerous and terrible. Rhetorical skill could boost the effectiveness of communications and conversations, and also brings some favorable personal impression to others. But if there is no sincerity, rhetorical skill can only result in duplicity ultimately. And duplicity will breed distrust, and everything we do will be perceived as manipulative. If there is little or no trust, there is no foundation for permanent success. All of these go against the meaning and tenet of education.
As it stands, it is essential to cultivate the virtues of mental agility and rhetorical skill, but the students should be encouraged to realize that how essential sincerity and the true conviction of their own beliefs are! The harmfulness of these two virtues isolated from sincerity and the true conviction of their own beliefs calls for this action during education. |
