[宣传]教授对于申请的意见以及牢骚

因为和教授关系比较好,我们闲聊时他近乎在发牢骚了.不过,看了之后，有些部分让我心里很不是滋味,对于某些不自觉的学生,只能哀其不幸,怒其不争了……（实在是不想上升到某个高度啊）以下为节选：

We are trying to see who has the best chance of becoming a good
researcher/scholar in our field. We want people who are academically strong,
who their recommenders say are creative, and who seem focused on what they
want to do (and it matches what we do, so we can advise them), and who show
an interest or understanding about what ecological economics is. People do
fail from PhD programs, others pass but their qualification is virtually
worthless because they are not very good. You don't really have a long time
to get it right in our program, before the money runs out. Really the
minimal time needed (that's not our policy but the university's). And to get
a good job you need to move very fast to get published before graduating
preferably (this levels the playing field with the graduates of the highly
ranked schools), go to conferences and get people to begin to know who you
are. And you have to get used to the American education system, study only
in English and be ready to teach American students at the end of it! Some
foreign students (including in our program) have a very hard time adapting
initially.

It is hard then to translate the ideal student who will do well in this
program into data we can see in an application. Obviously someone who is
already doing well in a grad program (masters level) in a Western and
preferably English speaking country shows that they might do well in ours.

My colleagues are very skeptical about recommendation letters from China.
All of them say how brilliant their students are. And we don't have a good
idea usually how good that professor is who is writing the letter. I think I
can read them a bit better. Some of my colleagues said they couldn't
evaluate any of the foreign and especially Chinese applications.

Well you have much more information here than any student is going to
usually ever have. You just need to do the best you can and be honest in
applications (we threw out one application from China because of copying
from other publications in the writing sample). We can usually tell when a
student is pretending to be interested in our field. There is no point in
that, people need to apply to the place that will suit them very well.
