To throw a menace to other countries, he announces his country has already had nuclear weapons. To stimulate the consumption in the nation, he predicts the economy will boost in the year. It is the political leader, the one never regarded as a truth teller. (这个开头挺有新意的)Someone thus asserts that complete honesty is not a useful virtue for a politician. Reasonable as it sounds, it however confused the concepts of “to tell the truth all the time” and “complete honesty”; and the latter is actually a useful virtue.(这里似乎不必用分号,分号后应该接一个完整的句子)
The concept of ‘complete honesty” differs from that of “to tell the truth all the time”. Complete honesty does not mean to tell whatever one knows, or to truly answer whenever one is asked. As a virtue, complete honesty for a politician or a political leader means to be absolute honest and loyal to his party and his country. Acquiring or abiding(abide做不及物动词时才有坚持得意思,作及物动词时只有容忍的意思,这里似乎不恰当) this virtue, a politician and a political leader sometimes has to avoid telling the truth to other parties, countries, media, and even their own people.
For a political leader, it is inappropriate to tell the truth in any situation. A political leader must serve for his party and his country, whose secrets need to be kept by him. Telling the truth of such things may bring safety threat from the other parties and countries. He, for example, must not or truly answer how many missiles they can produce per year, or proclaim to the enemy their military plan in a war. In addition, a political leader, limited to the factors of politics, economy, and interests, sometimes has to conceal the truth, or express no opinion on some sensitive topics. For example, some country leaders declare nothing on the war between Iraq and the Alliance, avoiding being involved in the issue; whereas some extremely support America, considering their interests relation with the latter. Politics and diplomacy are complex and capricious. An effective political leader is the one who wisely knows when to tell the truth, when to cover up the facts, and when to keep silent.
Nevertheless, complete honesty is not a useless virtue for a politician. 并且,第一段最后和第二段第三行已经写道complete honesty is a virtue,这样看来,第三段的论述说not tell truth的好处应该是承接第二段,支持complete honesty的)Complete honesty wins trust and support. A political leader will not permit any dishonest member in his party, while voters will not vote for a person as a leader who turns out to be treasonous. Watergate, as well known, resulted in Nixon leaving out of the White House; the finance scandal seriously rendered the president of South Korea impeached. By contrast, Martin Luther King, who was completely honest to his principle and his fellows, has been always eulogized by people. Complete honesty for a politician is not only a useful but an essential virtue.
In conclusion, an effective leader is firstly a completely honest leader to his party, his people, and his country, although he may sometimes not tell the truth. As a virtue, complete honesty is useful in gaining the support and trust, at any time and everywhere.
就我个人的观点,题目中透露的意思,completely honest 和tell the truth all the time应该是一回事,题目其实在问,政治家该不该撒谎。 不过本文把适当说谎归为completely honest,因为适当的说谎也是出于be absolute honest and loyal to his party and his country。
1.For a political leader, it is inappropriate to tell the truth in any situation.
2.Not telling the truth does not mean that he is not absolute honest and loyal to his party and his country.
3.Admittedly, dishonest has its harm for a politician.
