The following was written as a part of an application for a small business loan by a group of developers in the city of Monroe.
'A jazz music club in Monroe would be a tremendously profitable enterprise. Currently, the nearest jazz club is 65 miles away; thus, our proposed club, the C Note, would have the local market all to itself. Plus, jazz is extremely popular in Monroe: over 100,000 people attended Monroe's jazz festival last summer, several well-known jazz musicians live in Monroe, and the highest-rated radio program in Monroe is 'Jazz Nightly,' which airs every weeknight. Finally, a nationwide study indicates that the typical jazz fan spends close to $1,000 per year on jazz entertainment. It is clear that the C Note cannot help but make money.'

Prior to building the CN (C Note) jazz music club, the evidence provided in the argument should be examined from several other aspects. By listing some examples and analysis, the arguer assume that the CN will be a tremendously profitable enterprise. This might be a plausible hypothesis were it not for the following facts.

First of all, it's cited that the nearest jazz club is 65 miles away from the city of Monroe, and then the arguer assumes that CN will gain the whole market share. However, has the arguer thought about why this situation exists? It is entirely possible that there is high way leads to the nearest club, after all 65 miles is not that far away. It is also possible that citizen in Monroe prefer enjoy jazz music at home or they event do not have interest in jazz at all. In this case, CN might not own the whole local market or it's not worth to.

In addition, when the arguer refers to the popularity of jazz in Monroe, there are also lots of questions vague in the argument: What's the population of Monroe? Is 100,000 a large percentage? Or, is it possible that some special event was held in last summer jazz festival? Is it because that Monroe is famous for living that those musicians live there? Furthermore, does highest-rated radio program JN (Jazz Nightly) means jazz is popular in Monroe? It is possible that JN is not popular? Only when comparing to other radio programs, it is popular comparatively. In this case, the arguer neglects the inherent discrepancy between them. Event granted that jazz radio program is popular, the question remains as to the case that people prefer radio jazz than live one. Therefore, the arguer's recommendation of building CN is quite open to doubt.

What's more, the arguer also asserts that jazz fan in Monroe would like to spend money on jazz entertainment; since a national wide study shows that they spend nearly 1,000 per year. Even if some were to concede this conclusion, it's rarely sufficient to draw the conclusion from the national study, because it's entirely possible that Monroe is not representative of the nation in general. Granted that Monroe's jazz fans will, but it's too unwarranted to say that they will go to CN. For example, they might like buying jazz music CDs and perform home entertainment.

To sum up, the arguer undeliberately and rashly give the recommendation of building CN in Monroe which is quite questionable. Unless he/she pays more attention on the current jazz club situation and gains more statistics on the aforesaid study, the recommendation is logically untenable and unacceptable.
