7 "The video camera provides such an accurate and convincing record of contemporary life that it has become a more important form of documentation than written records."


People began to record and accumulate the knowledges since the paper came into being. For thousands of years, most of the knowledge and history was written in paper. Since the last century, with the development of the electronic technology, the video camera has become a popular products used by more and more people, and people now seem to favor the video camera much more than the paper. I strongly agree with the speaker that the video camera has become a more important and prevailing form of documentation than written records.

Firstly, the video documentation is more accurate than the written records. For example, if we hold a party, we would probabilly chose the video camera to record the whole party not the written article. Because the video record is more colorful and accurate. Perhaps serveral years after the party, when we watch the video again, we can clearly recall most of the interesting and meaningful things happen in the party. But if we just record the party by an article, then possibly we could only remember parts of the things. When we studied the history in our high school, we often imagined the scenes described in the history textbook. But now, if we use the video to record the important moments in the modern world, our offsprings will benefit a lot from the video record. It is statisticed that over 90% of our information is acquired from the images and videos. In a word, the video documentation gives more accurate and complete information than written record.

Secondly, the written record often carry the feelings and opinions of the author. In fact, it is inevitable that the author of the document would have attitudes and opinions towards the event he writtened and also inevitably combined the feelings into his articles. What is more, the reader is often easy influented by the feelings and comments given by the author. To some documents, such as historical documents, the authenticity is crucial to the record. The historical documents lost the values if the events are distorted. While the videos are less corrupted by the author's feelings and it gives much more objective description than the written document.

However, at the other hand, if people want to express the attitudes towards things, the better choice would be the written form. Especilly, when the author's comments are very outstanding and creative, the written document composed by him will be very precious. Therefore, the written form has its importance in some other occasions.

In summary, because the accuracy and objectiveness of the video documentation, I agree with the speaker's assertion that the vedio form is more important than the witten form in the modern world. In some special ocassions, the written form has its value also. With the development of technology, more accurate and precise vedio documentation will be allowed. Consequently, the importance of the vedio will increace.
