The following appeared as part of a business plan developed by the manager of the Rialto Theater.
"Despite its downtown location, the Rialto Movie Theater, a local institution for five decades, must make big changes or close its doors forever. It should follow the example of the new Apex Theater in the mall outside of town. When the Apex opened last year, it featured a video arcade, plush carpeting and seats, and a state-of-the-art sound system. Furthermore, in a recent survey, over 85 percent of respondents reported that the high price of newly released movies prevents them from going to the movies more than five times per year. Thus, if the Rialto intends to hold on to its share of a decreasing pool of moviegoers, it must offer the same features as Apex."

Though state-of-the-art technology attracts people, it doesn’t promise a success. Intel released a most powerful Pentium 4EE processor for personal computer in 2004 but it didn’t sell well. On the other hand, the less powerful ones, Celeron and the ordinary Pentium 4, have the largest market in the world and help Intel make large amount of money. So if you want to make a success, the most important thing is that you must satisfy the majority other than provide the most deluxe products or service to satisfy the rich only.

But with the development of technology, introducing a state-of-the-art system is absolutely necessary to meet the rising standard. I remember well that some ten years ago, personal computer was expensive, and only companies was able to afford one. Computers were used to do office work most of the time. But today, you can almost find PCs on every desk. Not only do computers perform office work from document processing and scientific research to programming and CAD, but also they play an important role in people’s life because they help people read and write emails, they help people keep with real-time events happening everywhere in the world, and they, some PCs with powerful hardware, can even be the home entertainment centre.

As to the fact mentioned in the business plan, I think it necessary to offer the same high-tech features as Apex one day, but perhaps not now. It’s never been fool to make an investigation before we make decisions. If the equipment Rialto offers is really far from up-to-date, and people don’t come for this reason, I guess it’s time Rialto updated its equipment to maintain its share of moviegoers.
