To examine the character of a society is an incisive task because the character has been formed during hundreds of thousands of years, and probably constantly changes from one generation to another. If we have the desire to examine the character of a society, some people may recommend the method of examining the character of the heroes or heroines in this society and they consider it best way to study the character. As far as I am concerned, I think examining the character of heroes or heroines is a good method to see the character of a society, but because other factors also embody the character of a society, it is too hard to decide which one is the best.

Heroes and heroines are those whose personality, world view and philosophy of life admitted by general public as typical examples and standards in the society. They, to some extent, can be said the ideal citizens of the society. When we retrospect to our human history, there are many heroes and heroines with different characters, such as bravery, loyalty, optimism, adamancy and so on. Their stories and spirits are used distinguishingly by different people for different intentions. For example, teachers and parents use them to educate their students and children, and government officers use them as a symbol of the spirit of their country, all of which manifest the desire of cultivating the young to be competent citizens later and regulating the adult's behavior contiguous to the ideal ones. Consequently, the whole society will form some characters distinguishingly from other societies after several generations because they may choose different types of heroes and heroines, in other words, choosing different standards.

Moreover we should not ignore a phenomenon that when the characters of a society change, accordingly, its heroes or heroines may change too. For example, during World War II, fascist in German, Italy, and Japan has been seen as heroes and heroines by citizens in these countries, and at that time these three countries were considered by other countries as brutal, bloody, and unhunmanity. Oppositely, today, most of these countries, such as German and Italy never canonize those fascist again, and the characters of their countries come back to peace, hardworking and goodness. From this example, we can see that characters of heroes or heroines can deeply influence the whole society's characters and when we study the characters of a society, choosing proper heroes or heroines may be a good method.

However, only examining the characters of heroes or heroines is not enough and in any case heroes or heroines’ characters may include some exaggerated and subjective elements for the reason to be a model. People should take reference of other information, such as the culture, the works, arts or some significant events. That is to say though examining the character of typical persons in a society may help us understand a society's characters, there are other factors can also provide us with information, such as the culture of contemporary people, the great art works of that society and so on. Consequently, to deciding which one is best for understanding the characters of a society is too hard and too absolute. We should make best use of all these information for our study but never too dependent on one thing to lose a whole view of a society's characters.

其实我最初的观点是想强调“研究英雄的确是个好方法”但写着就发现了“best”这个词，似乎这个论题的重点在“best”上，所以我就又拉回来一点，想说明“研究英雄的确是个好方法，但说它最好有点绝对，因为还有其他方法”
弟二旨在论述“社会将英雄作为合格公民的标准来培养下一代和约束成年人，久而久之形成了属于这个社会的characters"
第三段通过举例，旨在论述“推崇的英雄改变了，标志着国家的character也改变了”，这是为了进一步说明“英雄与社会特征紧密相连”
第四段拉回一点并作结尾，论述很难说“英雄方法是最好的”

我也觉得结尾有些仓促，但不知道我这个思路对不对，对题目的理解有没有偏差

我感觉可以这样说，研究英雄确实是个好的方法，尽管还存在其他的办法．　后面这部分做个让步．　至于the best, 我个人认为不用过分强调. 关于这个问题也希望和大家讨论一下!
