题目
The following was posted on an Internet real estate discussion site.
'Of the two leading real estate firms in our town—Adams Realty and Fitch Realty—Adams is clearly superior. Adams has 40 real estate agents. In contrast, Fitch has 25, many of whom work only part-time. Moreover, Adams' revenue last year was twice as high as that of Fitch, and included home sales that averaged $168,000, compared to Fitch's $144,000. Homes listed with Adams sell faster as well: ten years ago, I listed my home with Fitch and it took more than four months to sell; last year, when I sold another home, I listed it with Adams, and it took only one month. Thus, if you want to sell your home quickly and at a good price, you should use Adams.'

The arguer concludes that Adams can sell the house more quickly and at a higher price than Fitch. The evidence provided is the comparisons between the two from number of real estate agents, revenue last year and the experience from the arguer. However, these comparisons are too weak to make the conclusion valid.
One unfairly assumption in the argument is that the quality of a real estate firm is directly proportional to the quantity of its agents. However, it is possible that the effective of selling a home depends on the number of the agents. It is also possible that many other factors, such as attitude, efficiency and effective, could affect the selling of the home. For instance, the average working hours per week of Adams is less than that of Fitch. Moreover, the arguer does not provide substantial evidence that the 40 agents in Adams are all full-time job, and full-time job agents work more excellent than the part-time job agents. Put is simply, only on the basis of the offered evidence, not can the arguer convincingly conclude that Adams could sell the home more effective than Fitch.
Another logical fallacy called hasty generation also weakens the report. The arguer claims that Adams is more excellent than Fitch as both of the A's revenue and average price of home sale are higher than F. No substantial evidence is proved that the customer could get more benefits by using Adams. It is entire possible that the conditions, such as quality, location and environment, of the home sales by the two firm are different. However, if the value of the home sold by Adams is higher than Fitch, or the agent commission of Adams is much more than Fitch, how can this conclusion be telling?
In addition, the arguer’s own experience committed in the reasoning makes the argument invalid. It fails to rule out other factors could make this happen. For one thing, the circumstance last year may be totally different from those ten years ago. Perhaps the demand of the home last year is larger than ten years ago with the improving of living level and population growth. For another thing, the arguer fails to convince us that he/she got more profits by using Adams. It is possible that Fitch could sell a single house for a higher price than Adams could. Without considering all the possibilities between the two different homes, the comparison made by the arguer is unpersuasive.
To sum up, the comparisons in the argument leaves several logical fallacies and thus the conclusion that Adams is more effective than Fitch is problematic. To better bolster the arguments, it needs more convincing evidence within the comparison. |
