------题目------
Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively.
------正文------
Skepticism, a doubting and questioning attitude, instills students with a proper attitude towards whatever they hear and read, not only in academic field, but also in daily social life. This attitude, which insures people the courage and impetus to distrust the authority, is the most important base on which our academic research as well as social development is made progressed. Although in some rare cases does it impede young people's study, generally speaking, it helps us a lot in the inquring of knowlege.

In history, we have uncountable examples of how skepticism aimed people to make great contributions, especially in physics. If Galieo don't doubt about the logic of Aristotle's statement that heavier ones fall faster than lighter ones, and later proved such conclusion wrong by experimenting, our path towards to the true law of the nature will be blocked by such assertion for even longer. And when everyone believes without any suspect that the earth is the centre of the universe, it is Corpenier who dared to ask "why", and with his observation, found out that we are in fact revoluting around the sun and not in a still position. More modernly, Einstein with his relative theory, first challenged the classical Newton's three laws, and greatly impelled our cognition of this world, on a more macro scope, also a more micro scpoe. Clearly, it is skepcitism that firstly drove them to make deeper research on the authority's conclusions, and later ensured their courage to critize the latter.

In social sciences and art, whose charecteristics determined that new discoveries often mean the death of old theories, rather than merely detailed modifications on the classical structure as in sciences, such examples are more common. With deeper understanding of human nature and motives, new observations of more complicated social phenomenon, and inefficiency of traditional regulations in the modern world, important changes have to be made now and then. That is why our law is being audited again and again, and why so many economists doubt about what the older generation used to explain the cause of international trade, and point out that they can't fit into the new business pattern. Without skepticism, people will simply accept what is said long ago, and try to find their own fault, fearing to question and develop a better theory.

So it can be said that skepticism is the foundation of progress in academic field. And its merits are even more. Our students, after their learing, will finally become the mainstream of the society. And their attitude towards new information will grow with them. When someone dare not question and doubt, how can he become an active part of our democratic society?  Probably he will just trust the president and the government blindly, accept their decisions and obey the regulation, and won't have any comments on what is going on, because without the attitude of skepticism, he has long lost the ability to bring out anything new.

I have to admit that when students are very young, they  have to simply accept some experiencial knowlege to form their basic fondation. But I think this period is their preparation for questioning in later study.

In summary, skepticism is important for students' learning. Such attitude is much more than simiply questioning. In fact, it is the impetus most of our progress.

This attitude, which insures people the courage and impetus to distrust the authority, is the most important base on which our academic research as well as social development is made progressed. 不过确实跳了,应该在中间加上the most important base on which innovation can ever be made, and thus progress.这样呢?

So it can be said that skepticism is the foundation of progress in academic field. 既然如此建议把此句改一下用一个让步句如下
So it can be said that skepticism, though second to the innovaton, is of great importance to the foundation in academic field,

And its merits are even more.
这句是你貌似你第四段的中心句,但是后面都是从反面论证,并没有说明这个more merits在哪里。至少没有明确地说出来。
And their attitude towards new information will grow with them. When someone dare not question and doubt, how can he become an active part of our democratic society?
