Argument 206

------题目------
The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Parkville Daily Newspaper.
'Throughout the country last year, as more and more children below the age of nine participated in youth-league softball and soccer, over 80,000 of these young players suffered injuries. When interviewed for a recent study, youth-league softball players in several major cities also reported psychological pressure from coaches and parents to win games. Furthermore, education experts say that long practice sessions for these sports take away time that could be used for academic activities. Since the disadvantages apparently outweigh any advantages, we in Parkville should discontinue organized athletic competition for children under nine.'

提纲:
A. To begin with, the author fails to convince us that the disadvantages of participating in sports activities and youth-league games actually outweigh any advantages of doing so.
B.In addition, the author commits a fallacy of hasty generalization in claiming that Parkville should discontinue all kinds of organized athletic competition for children under nine.

------正文------
In this letter, the author recommends that organized athletic competition for children under nine should be discontinued because the disadvantages of it apparently outweigh any advantages. To support his recommendation, the author cites several evidences: 1) over 80,000 of those young players who participated in youth-league softball and soccer suffered injuries; 2) a recent study shows that youth-league softball players in several major cities reported psychological pressure from both coaches and parents to win games;3) education experts concern that long practice sessions for these sports may occupy time that could be used for academic activities.
Although this letter contains some merits, it suffers from several critical flaws.

To begin with, the author fails to convince us that the disadvantages of participating in sports activities and youth-league games actually outweigh any advantages of doing so. First, it does not mention the number of children under nine who participate in organized athletic competition and if 80,000 is a large proportion. It is possible that compared with a large base amount, 80,000 means only a small proportion of it, thus it is presumptuous to say that the majority of those under-nines who take part in sports suffers injuries. Second, the author does not refer to the severity of the reported injuries. If most of the injuries are just minor ones such as bruise and scratches, we cannot say that the disadvantages of the sports are unacceptable. Third, the result of a recent study quoted in this letter, though suggestive of the disadvantages of organized athletic competition, is insufficient to guarantee their truth because we have good reason to doubt that information drawn from several unnamed cities and youth-league softball players is representative enough to reflect the overall situations throughout the country.

In addition, the author commits a fallacy of hasty generalization in claiming that Parkville should discontinue all kinds of organized athletic competition for children under nine. There is no evidence to demonstrate that organized athletic competition other than soccer and softball league, for example volleyball and cricket, does impose the same physical and psychological burden on children, if the burden exists at all. Besides, the author provides no information concerning that if participating in organized athletic competition has led to lowered academic performance among children under nine. Furthermore, he overlooks the advantages of sports activities, which can promote team spirit, foster a healthy habit, help to improve the physical health of children and so on.

To sum up, this argument does not sound reasonable enough as it stands. I would suspend my judgment until the author can provide more precise data and information concerning the overall consequence of children participating in organized athletic competition.
