In order for any work of art—whether film, literature, sculpture, or a song—to have merit, it must be understandable to most people.

It is well known that any work of art have its characteristic. Therefore I do not agree with the position that in order for any work of art-whether film, literature, sculpture, or a song- to have merit, it must be understandable to most people.

Because any work of art comes from different time, material and writer's experience, thus it is difficult to be understandable to most people. Any work of art come from life, whether film, literature, sculpture, or a song. For example if you see a film, it is possible you can find the similar thing have happened in your life. If you listen to a song you can express different emotions because the song touches your feeling inside heart. However due to different ways and experience in watching world, it is impossible that most people can understand motif of works. If people can understand work of art deeply and learn about what writer want to express, the same experience or basic knowledge structure can contribute to attain the object. All of these cannot say in order for any work of art to have merit, it must be understandable to most people.

Additionally, many art works are beyond knowledge and understanding of common people. The purpose of art is to seek difference and open mind not to pursue the same point. In addition, to some extent artists are beyond what common knowledge can image. Many great artists, such as Van Gogh, a famous painter, most of his works can not be understandable to most people in his time. However now his works are recognized their value and worthy of being collected, even real value can be found by few people. The reason why generate this situation is that there exist cultural lag, which means that most of art works need several years even several hundred years to realize value of art works. It is cultural lag that make impossible to be understandable to most people.

Furthermore, the standard of evaluating art is not being understandable to most people. Take an example, pop music is popular in many youths and understandable to most people. However this kind of music has not merit. After several years these music will not remember by most people, the reason is they have no real value. These works just cater to taste of most people, but purpose of real art works is not to cater somebody, is way to express artists’ emotions for the world. The same example happens in field of film, literature and sculpture. Although Mona Lisa's smile, a famous painting, most people cannot understand the mysterious smile, but it is common considered as a great art work. Consequently, if art work have merit it is unnecessary to be understandable to most people.

Because any work of art comes from different time (times 时代是可数名词), material （ materials）and writer's experience, thus( thus 是不是多多余，前面刚刚说Because的) it is difficult to be understandable（ understood）  to most people. Any work of art come from life, whether film, literature （literature work）, sculpture, or a song.（1.这句话看的比较的怪，2.这句话放在这里跟上文好象不是能特别好的衔接） For example if you see a film, it is possible you can find the similar thing（ things that） have happened in your life. If you listen to a song you can express different(certain) emotions because the song touches your feeling inside( your) heart.
