Argument65 第6篇 限时了改了基本错误请砸,必回 379字
------摘要------
The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.
'For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses.'
------正文------
In this argument, the arguer recommends that discontinuing stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrating primarily on domestic cheeses is the best way of improving profits in all of our stores. To substantiate the conclusion, the arguer cites a relevant survey and some evidences, however, the argument is unconvincing for several critical fallacies after careful consideration. My reasons are as follows:
To begin with, there are some problems with the research from the Wisconsin(W)'s cheeses. for one thing, the best-selling of only one year can not sufficiently support that it would be popular next year, it is fully possible that these domestic cheeses from W would not last for a long time and people just like it for a while; for another thing, the store are the newest, without experience, they do not sell the imported cheeses at all. It can not rule out the possibility that imported cheeses would be better welcomed than the cheeses from W.
Moreover, a recent survey is not informative to prove the conclusion. In the first place, the survey comes from the world magazine, and it is no doubt that the respondents come from a widely culture and a great number of countries, therefore, the result of world can not represent the situation of United States, in the second place, how many subscribers are they conducted? Perhaps, the number of subscribers is small which only take few part of people of United States, if so, the survey is highly suspect to support the conclusion.
Provided that the domestic cheeses sell better, the conclusion is also unwarranted. Common sense tells us that there are many ways to improve profits, without detailed comparison to other commodities it is not cogent to say selling cheeses is the best ways, furthermore, it is impractical for all of our stores to sell cheeses, because there are other forms of stores that cheeses is not fit to sell here such as home appliance stores and so on.
To sum up, the arguer is well presented but not well reasoned and the evidences can not strongly support the conclusion. To make it logical, the arguer should supply some more evidences about the survey, additionally, the arguer should make comparisons between the profits of all kinds of commodities. |
