Issue144 艺术家与批评家 机经题 preparing of 3.14AW
------题目------
It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value.
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
------正文------
Which kind of persons gives society something of lasting value, the artist or the critic? The answer of the speaker is the artist. Although I concede that critics can help ordinary people to understand and appreciate the arts, I strongly agree with the speaker that the profound works of artists rather than the criticism are of great value during a long period of time.

Admittedly, to some extent evaluation offered by the critics may be valuable in the short term. As we known, critics usually have deep aesthetic knowledge and are familiar with particular artists. Thus, they could provide insights and perspectives of the works that otherwise would not be discovered by the laypersons. Moreover, there are tens of thousands of films and popular music records produced every day. Only by following the guidance of the critics can an individual in the increasingly rapid pace of live make the decision whether to see the films and listen to the records or not. If a person saw the critique that a current prevailing film is badly made actually, he would probably save the time to reading some meaningful literature.

However, the criticisms of the critics are not always helpful, sometimes may even proved to be misleading in the long run. Since the standard the critics rely on is according to the established rule of arts, they might regard the creativities of artists as heresy and looked down on them. History is replete of critics’ failure to correctly judging the arts. Consider Van Gogh, two of whose still life paintings broken the price record recently. Yet he only sold out one of his painting in his life. The reason is that the expressionism he insisted on was entirely different from the traditional way of painting thus was treated by critics as unvalued. Another telling example involves Beethoven. The dismissal of his symphonies of the critics in his time is also turn out to be absurd. It is fortunate that both Van Gogh and Beethoven stuck to their inspirations and creativities regardless of the depreciation of critics. The unfair critique could determine the advancement of arts and constrain the creativity of artists.

Finally, while critics have certain negative effects on the arts, artists create beauty in which lies the lasting value of arts. One may wonder why art works created centuries ago, such as Mona Lisa, are still cherished by numerous people throughout the world. The answer is the eternal beauty. The mysterious smiling of Mona Lisa is not only the mere combination and arrangement of the color, line, light and shadow da Vinci used, but also product of the artist’s passion and spirit, of which beauty is unchangeable by time. Other forms of arts, such as ballet, embodying the graceful movement of human, are also admired by most people as beauty. Moreover, the humanity and love reflected in paintings, literature and music are also something invaluable regardless of time.

In the last analysis, critics play a subordinate role to the artists in that without the works started by the artist, there is no need for critics to be existed. Because the critics are limited to their time, their evaluations based on the arts are not always correct, let alone making something of lasting value. In contrast, the artists originating their unique works from beauty and humanity, not only give a lot of pleasure to the people, but also help to form the whole culture of lasting value.

However, the criticisms of the critics are not always helpful(换个词), sometimes may even proved to be misleading in the long run. Since the standard(换个词criteria, gauge etc) the critics rely on is according to (换in with light with)the established rule of arts, they might regard the creativities of artists as heresy and looked down on them. History is replete of(这个短语用得不错) critics’ failure to correctly judging the arts. Consider Van Gogh, two of whose still life paintings broken the price record recently. Yet he only sold out one of his painting in his life. (这个例子太滥,可以一两个词提过好了)The reason is that the expressionism he insisted on was entirely different(换diverse, distinguish, distinctive) from the traditional way of painting thus was treated by critics as unvalued.

Moreover(第一段用过了), the humanity and love reflected in paintings, literature and music are also something invaluable regardless of time.

In the last analysis, critics play a subordinate role to the artists in that without the works started by the artist, there is no need for critics to be existed. Because the critics are limited to their time, their evaluations based on the arts are not always correct, let alone making something of lasting value. In contrast, the artists originating their unique works from beauty and humanity(其他的地方如果也能做到押运就好了,比如前面的cherish可以押), not only give a lot of pleasure to the people, but also help to form the whole culture of lasting value.(断句,把这个句子倒装)
