While a great majority of the whole generation, whether they are teacher or lawyers, in poverty of in rich, would be inclined to criticize of current educational system because of its highly executed grade mechanism, the others are in favor of such a system. Before I draw my own conclusion concerning such a serious issue, I would examine it advantages and negative ones at first.
As it is known to us all, education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one, and to realise our dreaming goal. We are also very familiar with the conception that the major goal of education is to help us become autonomous, creative, inquiring people who have the will and intelligence to create our own destiny. Therefore, when we discern any deviation from its original route, it is our resposibility to correct it immediately. In the first place, we should delve into the real essence of grading mechanism.
As soon as education came into its primitive being, examinations, namely various tests, acompanied as a natural result, for the simple reason to testify the quality of teaching and learning, two factors of paramount importance in any level of education. Having taken thousands of examinations, students, the core of education, are well prepared to find their places in the society. Grading mechanism serves us by proving a scientific evaluating system, and to some degree it facilitates our surroundings. Firstly, students are propelled to compete with each other streneously in that they want to earn better achievement and CV when they graduate someday. Subsequently, the whole academic atomosphere, whether it is in a university of in a middle school, is enhanced accordingly. Prominent universities all over the world, including Cambridge, Oxford, and Gottengen, are excellent examples of famous academic atomosphere driven by students' desire to earn high marks.
In addition, to a large sense, higher grades equal to proficiency in a certain academic field. For example, T. S. Ke, a worldwide metal physicist had remarked that teachers had propensity to enroll students with high scores, because better students always were very familiar with every aspect of their knowledge learned from textbooks. What is more, those who could not get high marks will be stimulated to emulate with the others in the long run.
However, grading mechanism also serves us as a curse sometimes. It is very apparent that schools nowadays put undue pressure to their students, and parents treat their children only by means of high scors. Some experts in education have pinpointed some drawbacks of this system. One of them is narrow-minded students who are not competent for comprehensive tasks. A good case in point is that many graduates, though having get decent GPAs, might not connect a simply electroic network. Besides, students in lower EQs, a important factor that determines the final success of an individual, are increasing dramatically. Finally, the number of teenager suicide is rocketing this days. All of these unharmonious facts are plaguing the society to the extent that a consultant of UNESCO has remarked that competence of the world would shrink correspondingly.
To sum up, grading mechanism serves the society as both a blessing and a curse. It if our responsibility to promote positive aspects of this well-structured system with ardor and persistence. Nevertheless, it is very gratuitous to abandon it without any consideration, because the truth of the real world is that without standards and judgments, there can be no progress. |
