The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.
'For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses.'

In this argument, the arguer concludes that to improve profits of the stores, they should discontinue stocking many of their varieties of imported cheeses and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses. To support the conclusion, the arguer points out that a survey indicated that an increasing preference for domestic cheeses is existed and their company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory.  In addition, the arguer reasons that their newest stores were selling cheeses made in Wisconsin much more than imported cheeses. However, this argument still suffers from several fallacies.

First of all, as the arguer said, both the domestic and imported cheeses have their own market for many years. This kind of situation represented that the imported cheeses has its good affects so that it can last for a long time even it expenses a lot by inventory. Like the spiders, even it is looked ugly and dangerous; it can kill many harmful insects. There are a lot of people who do not consider the spiders as a kind of insects. They answered that spiders have only six feet. However, the true reason is that spiders are good and necessary for us. Every thing has its bad affects, while we can not forget the good side.

Secondly, the range is too small. Only five of their newest stores' condition of selling is not enough. Even they are best selling ones. The arguer should have provided more information of selling conditions in other stores. The survey of the magazine faced the same problem. Only the subscribers can not represent all the people. We can not assure the number of the subscribers. What is more, the situation has not been taken into account that the subscribers had not told truth instead of choosing one option randomly.

Thirdly, we do not know if the way to improve profits which the arguer claimed can work. Common sense told us the inventory is significantly important for a store. Thus, limiting it may bring profits decline. Further more, the arguer have not provided any information of the cost of neither domestic cheeses nor imported ones so that it is hard to say which are more expensive.

In addition, the sources of the information in the argument are unclear, including the five stores' selling condition and the survey of the magazine.

To conclude, this argument is not persuasive and suffers from some fallacies. Before we accept the conclusion, the arguer must present more facts that why the people would like to choose the domestic cheeses. To solidify the argument, the arguer would have to produce more evidence concerning the acceptability of the survey and prove that the domestic cheeses are more economical.
